IARC (W.H.O.) CLASSIFIES RADIOFREQUENCY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS AS POSSIBLY CARCINOGENIC TO HUMANS
PRESS RELEASE #208: World Health Organization and International Agency for Research on Cancer
"Lyon, France, May 31, 2011
The WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B,) based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer associated with wireless phone use . . .
"Dr Jonathan Samet (University of Southern California, USA), overall Chairman of the [IARC] Working Group, indicated that "the evidence, while still accumulating, is strong enough enough to support a conclusion and the 2B classification. The conclusion means that there could be some risk, and therefore we need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer risk."
"While these conclusions focus on cell phones, it is usual that these international bodies are conservative in their approach, often confirming, long after damage has been done. Indeed, until now they have been using the phrase "there is no evidence." But today's announcement is a break-through in their view, and clearly supports the contention we have made . . . that research just hasn't been done on the long-term effects of this kind of radiation on humans. Moreover, today's IARC announcement strongly suggests that there is now even more reason for local governments and agencies to exercise care and common sense precautions with respect to the part they play in adopting policies regarding their use and approval of facilities that emit radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, be they cell towers or Wi-Fi installations in schools."
