Perspectives and Insights

Societies are complicated systems, and humans are creative and complex creatures with different points of view. The definition of progress is not the same for all people and every person brings to this planet his or her own unique set of circumstances, insights and opinions.

However, it seems some truths are universal.  Even with opposing beliefs, disparate amounts of knowledge and patience, and controversy, there are opportunities to find common ground and solve problems that appear to be overwhelming.

In the following, you may find a new perspective or vantage point, or some new courage.  A more philosophical point of view . . . strategies and solutions.

"I banned laptops in the classroom after it became common practice to carry them to school. When I created my "electronic etiquette policy" (as I call it in my syllabus), I was acting on a gut feeling based on personal experience. I'd always figured that, for the kinds of computer-science and math classes that I generally teach, which can have a significant theoretical component, any advantage that might be gained by having a machine at the ready, or available for the primary goal of taking notes, was negligible at best. We still haven't made it easy to type notation-laden sentences, so the potential benefits were low. Meanwhile, the temptation for distraction was high. I know that I have a hard time staying on task when the option to check out at any momentary lull is available; I assumed that this must be true for my students, as well.

"Over time, a wealth of studies on students' use of computers in the classroom has accumulated to support this intuition. Among the most famous is a landmark Cornell University study from 2003 called "The Laptop and the Lecture," wherein half of a class was allowed unfettered access to their computers during a lecture while the other half was asked to keep their laptops closed.

"The experiment showed that, regardless of the kind or duration of the computer use, the disconnected students performed better on a post-lecture quiz. The message of the study aligns pretty well with the evidence that multitasking degrades task performance across the board. . . .

"I had one small suggestion, which I will implement the next time I teach (and for that class, I will generally continue to have the laptops closed): I will require my students to read some of the studies I've alluded to in this post, to help them understand why I'm doing what I'm doing and to get them to think critically about the use of technology in their lives and their education.

"We're not all that far along in understanding how learning, teaching, and technology interact in the classroom. Institutions should certainly enable faculty to experiment with new technology, but should also approach all potential classroom intruders with a healthy dose of skepticism, and resist the impulse to always implement the new, trendy thing out of our fear of being left behind."

Wireless concerns raised by death of close friend

Letter to the Editor of Nanaimo Daily News

" . . . Were "convenience and connectedness" worth it? For all their convenience, they won't reconnect me to Lynda. I'll never see Lynda again, never hear her voice, never marvel with her about creation.

"I'm glad that my body reacts to microwave radiation and warns me to leave dangerous areas. I have learned to listen to my body, and not to some bored electronics engineer who has no clue - or care - about biology . . ."

We Are All One

A Short Film

Published on Mar 16, 2014

We are the voice of every living thing there is." Thank you Sandlephon.

Narrators of We Are All One: Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Oren Lyons and Russell Means. Native American words of wisdom and our link to all life and the future of our planet.

Personal commentary: Whether you know it or not, like it or not, want it or not, we are engaged in a struggle that concerns every living being on our planet, the human spirit, and defending the earth against further environmental destruction. All life is sacred and a beautiful gift that must be respected and protected at all cost.

Earth's dependence on fossil fuels, coal mining, fracking and nuclear plants are not needed at all. Yet the powers that be continue to keep humanity chained to dirty energy, create wars for it, destroy the environment, poison ground water and harm mother Earth so we can continue using the same old techniques that generate trillions of dollars for those at the top of the energy industry. This can't go on. We need to change things now, not in 2015, 2020, 2030 - NOW! The future of our planet and all life depend on it.

Part 2

The Purpose: Is to change the global markets to protect the ecosystems of our beautiful world. Every single person should make aware choices in order to preserve and help our ecosystems thrive, not perish. Individuals have the power to make a huge difference and hold corporations accountable for the environmental destruction that is happening everywhere. People are the consumers in this world, what we don't buy, doesn't sell. Visit the website: http://www.weareallone-support.org

Oren Lyons: In an era of self-promotion, Oren Lyons represents the antithesis of celebrity. When he converses about serious issues, no insistent ego comes to the fore, no desire to be seen as an important or wise person. His voice is but one in a long series, as he sees it, and the wisdom belongs not to him but to the tradition for which he speaks. HERE

EHS research and review are polluted by the bad science

From the Science Blog on Mobile Phone Radiation and Health by Dariuz Leszczynski

"Recent publication of the Canadian report on Safety Code 6 (RF-EMF and health) brought again to limelight the problem of electromagnetic hypersensitivity - EHS.

"Yet again, scientists and lay audiences were fed with the standard mantra in the Canadian report: "The symptoms are real, but what causes them is a mystery". The same mantra is propagated by WHO, ICNIRP and numerous expert committees.

"I have the feeling that this mantra was introduced to the EMF research area few years ago for the sole purpose to "get the EHS people off our backs". Designers of this mantra assumed that by showing compassion for the suffering of EHS people they will alleviate tensions that exist between EHS sufferers and decision-makers.

"They were mistaken. The mantra did not alleviate tensions and EHS sufferers more and more forcefully demand solution to their problem. Simple admission that their symptoms and suffering are real is not enough. What is needed is both, precautionary approach and a serious research effort to find out what and how causes EHS.

"Unfortunately the arena of EHS research is polluted with bad science. Badly designed studies waste money and produce bad conclusions. This status quo is perpetuated and new funding is granted for new badly designed studies. Are scientists gone mad? Don't they understand what they are doing?

"One of the problems with EHS research is its domination by psychologists and psychiatrists. This leads to generation of research studies that by design are unable to detect EHS. Using methods of psychology or psychiatry will not answer whether biochemically physiology of our body is affected by the exposure to EMF. . .

Resonance - Beings of Frequency

(documentary film) by James Russell

Comment: This may be one of the most important documentaries ever made. You will need almost 90 minutes to watch the entire film, but it is time well spent. Anyone using wireless devices should watch this film.

RESONANCE is an eye opening documentary which reveals the harm we are doing by existing in an ocean of man made wireless frequencies.

Two billion years ago life first arrived on this planet; a planet, which was filled with a natural frequency. As life slowly evolved, it did so surrounded by this frequency. and Inevitably, it began tuning in.

By the time mankind arrived on earth an incredible relationship had been struck; a relationship that science is just beginning to comprehend.

Research is showing that being exposed to this frequency is absolutely integral to us. It controls our mental and physical health, it synchronizes our circadian rhythms, and it aids our immune system and improves our sense of wellbeing.

Not only are we surrounded by natural frequencies, our bodies are filled with them too. Our cells communicate using electro magnetic frequencies. Our brain emits a constant stream of frequencies and our DNA delivers instructions, using frequency waves. Without them we couldn't exist for more than a second.

This delicate balance has taken billions of years to perfect. But over the last 25 years the harmony has been disturbed. and disturbed dramatically.

Mankind has submerged itself in an ocean of artificial frequencies. They are all around us, filling the air and drowning out the earth's natural resonance.

To the naked eye the planet appears to be the same. But at a cellular level it is the biggest change that life on earth has endured; the effects of which we are just starting to see and feel.

Smart Meters A Little Too Smart? Personal Surveillance

EMF Safety Network - U.S. applicable to Canada and elsewhere (Introduction by Rafe Mair) (Originally posted December 2011)

Introduction by Rafe Mair.

RAFE HERE:
I regard most videos I get with great suspicion . . . many of them have that "Hitler is alive and well living in Argentina" look about them.

This video which has "Smart Meters" as surveillance devices, frankly, disturbs me greatly and if it is true, even up to a point, we must demand an answer not from BC Hydro - why talk to the monkey when you can talk to the organ grinder?

This and another big question arise - this is a one billion dollar exercise and not only were we not consulted, neither were our MLA's.

This is taxation - for that's what it is - without representation.  Hitler may not be alive and well in Argentina but I regard this video as a message that must be dealt with.  Oh, Yes . . . 'if you've nothing to hide, why are you against a little surveillance?"

The answer is that I do have something to hide . . . MY PRIVACY!"

What's Hidden Among the Internet of Things

CBC: The Current January 20, 2014

RADIO BROADCAST

"We text with it, download with it, buy with it, sell with it, play with it and work with it. And now, it may be payback time. Today we look at how the Internet of Things may be poised to tell tales about us over the web.

"We become what we behold. We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us." Marshall McLuhan,
Philosopher of Communication Theory

"One of the less popular rides at DisneyWorld is the Carousel of Progress. It features a shiny, optimistic vision of the future that includes voice-activated appliances. . . .

"There's a lot of consumer interest in these new gadgets - but also privacy concerns. Last week, Google bought Nest, a maker of smart thermostats and smoke detectors, for more than 3-Billion-dollars. Days before that, Google was found in violation of Canada's privacy laws. And its move to get a foothold in the smart gadget market caused an outcry in the tech world.

"Today, we're asking where all this technology is heading, how we can benefit and what we may lose in the process.

"Robert Platek is the CEO of Sensor Suite, a technology system that lets building owners get real-time alerts about their properties over their smartphones. It's currently in use in 30 buildings across Toronto. Robert Platek was in Toronto.

"Avner Levin is the Director of the Privacy and Cyber Crime Institute at Ryerson University. He shares his insight on how to protect ourselves and our data from the Internet of Things. Avner Levin was in our Toronto studio.

"Christine Rosen is a fellow at the New America Foundation, a non-partisan think-tank in Washington. . . .

Looming Health Crisis: Wireless Technology and the Toxification of America

a good overview of the problems we're facing with the proliferation of wireless transmitters that has changed our environment over the last 15-20 years. Prof. James F. Tracy July 2012

" . . . The smart grid technology is being sold to the public as a way to "empower" individual energy consumers by allowing them to access information on their energy usage so that they may eventually save money by programming "smart" (i.e, wireless enabled) home appliances and equipment that will coordinate their operability with the smart meter to run when electrical rates are lowest. In other words, a broader plan behind smart grid technology involves a tiered rate system for electricity consumption that will be set by the utility to which customers will have no choice but to conform.

"Because of power companies' stealth rollout of smart meters a large majority of the public still remains unaware of the dangers they pose to human health. This remains the case even though states such as Maine have adopted an "opt out" provision for their citizens. The devices have not been safety-tested by Underwriters Laboratory and thus lack the UL approval customary for most electronics.

"Further, power customers are typically told by their utilities that the smart meter only communicates with the power company "a few times per day" to transmit information on individual household energy usage. However, when individuals obtained the necessary equipment to do their own testing they found the meters were emitting bursts of RF radiation throughout the home far more intense than a cell phone call every minute or less . . .

"Our advocacy groups know that many parents and most teachers who are concerned regarding wireless radiation in school environments feel as if they have been muzzled regarding this issue.

"I can't comment on whether or not any impropriety or discrimination or harassment or other harm is intended or disregarded. I know that whatever transpires, it's a fact that there are many teachers who personally feel ridiculed and that their job security and related normal expectations are imperiled by their efforts to investigate and be prudent about these radiation exposures to school children and for reasons of workplace safety.

"It's also a fact that there are many teachers -- and children -- who are made ill by exposure to this type of radiation.

"Even if it is legal to urge and insist that teachers and parents must 'voluntarily' agree to accept the presence of a physical radiation agent in schools, and even if it is legal to insist that teachers 'voluntarily' agree to not discuss the topic of wireless radiation in schools with their peers nor anyone else (and I'm not saying whether or not such insisting is legal, because I don't know), it's certainly unconscionable to accept this approach when supposedly we all care about each other and care about children, and where certainly we live in a country where usually no one should ever feel attacked or afraid to speak up in the best interests of children (or anyone else)."
