Cellular and portable phones, though suddenly and seemingly indispensable in our society, are a direct product of the wireless industry's successful attempt to sell us speed, convenience and entertainment all in one seductive package. In the long term, biologically safe alternatives to wireless cell and portable DECT phones will become necessary, as already they are causing negative effects that impact all living systems.

Experts can't agree on the answer"Is a rise in brain tumours linked to the radiation sources we hold so close to our heads? Experts can't agree on the answer. "Allegations of lobbying, bad science, not enough science, conflicts of interest, political inertia, scaremongering and lawsuits: the debate surrounding the safety of mobile phones has it all. With more than 5 billion users worldwide, mobile phones have undoubtedly become central to modern life in just two decades, but could they be a health hazard? . . .

"Scientists at the Children with Cancer conference in London this week will advocate that governments adopt the 'precautionary principle' - advising phone users to take simple steps to protect themselves and their children from potential, not proven, long term health risks of electromagnetic fields - especially head cancers.

"They will call for urgent research into new Office of National Statistics figures that suggest a 50 per cent increase in frontal and temporal lobe tumours - the areas of the brain most susceptible to the electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile phones - between 1999 and 2009 . . .
"The Department of Health currently has a confusing online-only leaflet which states that there is no immediate concern but under-16s should be encouraged to minimise phone use and if concerned about risks, choose hands free kits or texting.

"In stark contrast France has banned phones from primary schools and advertising targeted at children, and companies must provide headsets with every phone.

"Israel recently became the latest of a very small, but growing number of governments to introduce legislation requiring all mobile phones and adverts to come with a health alert: "Warning - the Health Ministry cautions that heavy use and carrying the device next to the body may increase the risk of cancer, especially among children."

"The law, which last month passed its first reading, also seeks to ban, like with tobacco, companies from marketing to children . . .

"The research is split almost 50:50, on whether mobile phones pose a health hazard or not. But the balance changes if funding sources are considered, with around three quarters of the 'negative' studies - no health risks - funded by industry . . .

"Most current studies are at least part funded by industry, or involve researchers with industry links . . .

"This is the largest technological experiment in the history of our species and we're trying to bury our head in sand about the potential risks to cells, organs, reproduction, the immune system, behaviour, risks we still know next to nothing about . . .

Interview with Professor Annie Sasco, MD, MPH, MS, Dr PH"Despite the voices of industry-funded scientists saying otherwise there is concrete evidence that mobiles/cellphones and wifi cause cancer in humans. In 2011 the IARC reclassified them as Class 2B, possibly carcinogenic, yet they actually had enough evidence if not the courage to go further and classify them as Class 2A, probably carcinogenic.
Here Dr Annie Sasco, Harvard Doctorate, ex-Head of the IARC on cancer research, ex-cancer specialist for the WHO and now group leader of an INSERM programme on cancer prevention in France, talks frankly in an exclusive interview about why we should be concerned - especially for children. Even if you don't use a mobile phone or wifi you are still affected. "Watch this video for true facts, not industry-funded hype that there is no evidence of harm. It could save your life."<a href=" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JyAlO_UdSk" style="color: blue !important; text-decoration: underline !important; cursor: text !important; "> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JyAlO_UdSk</a>www.anglo-polish.co.uk

Dariusz Leszczyenski is Research Professor at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland.HELSINKI, April 7, 2012"Development of new wireless technologies is like the speed of a Formula 1 racing car. Why? Because it brings large profit. Research on health effects of these new technologies is at the speed of Amish horse carriage going through road with lots of speed bumps. Why? Because it may slow down profitability . . . "What is health? Society went a long way from the definition of health by Hippocrates, "Father of Medicine," to the current definition by the World Health Organization (WHO). It reflects not only change in medical sciences but also change in our ways of perception of the surrounding world . . .

"The WHO defines health as "a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

"Using the WHO definition of health, which speaks of "mental and social well-being," it is reasonable to argue that cell phones, either as source of radiation or as social communication gadget or both, are detrimental to human health . . .

<strong style="font-weight: 700; font-style: normal; ">"We have been WARNED, and this warning should be repeated, repeated, repeated . . . Use cell phone responsibly and reduce exposures whenever possible and feasible."</strong>

Company wants to pull pay phones in the Nebraska town of Chambers as cell phone coverage grows stronger."It's just kind of a thing of the past. It doesn't make sense to keep those there . . . "K &amp; M is making a case on principle, too. When the telephone industry was deregulated, the Public Service Commission lost its oversight of pay phones."But they're requiring us to maintain a deregulated service over which it has no authority," Woods said.
"The rule still requires a phone in every town, Hand said, even if the commission can't control what the company charges.
"The rule is about having a phone there. It's not about the terms and conditions."
"Other companies continue to eat losses. More than 200 miles to the west, the Keystone-Arthur Telephone Co. keeps pay phones for the locals in Keystone and Lemoyne and the tourists at lakes McConaughy and Ogallala.

"But Keystone-Arthur hasn't considered pulling them, the company's Kelly Gies said . . .
"If nobody protests the move by May 2, Hand likely will recommend commissioners approve the application on a modified procedure basis, meaning no public hearing, just a vote -- and the possible end of 24-hour public phone service in two rural Nebraska towns . . .

NovaMind Connect: Linked overview of reports, mechanisms, studies and articles"Tinnitus is the perception of sound (ringing, hissing, buzzing) in one or both ears, not produced by an external source. It is a common complaint, affecting approximately one in six Americans. It ranges in severity from a mild background noise to a constant disabling disruption of daily function. Some cases begin following known stresses such as loud noises or medications, but many times the causes are unknown.

"Many people sensitive to non-ionizing electromagnetic fields describe various ear sensations -- heat, throbbing, pain -- as well as tinnitus. Some studies have been performed and several mechanisms suggested. This [Mind] map offers a linked overview of reports, mechanisms, studies and articles. "Branch on microwave hearing added 03/11/12.

The single, most overlooked factor in behavior issues in children."Cell phone radiation is one of the hottest and most controversial health topics of 2012. But it's especially critical when it comes to regulating cellular technologies for pregnant women and children . . ."Landmark research from the Journal of Epidemiology in July 2008 reported that children born to mothers who used cell phones while pregnant, and children who used cell phones by age seven, were 80 percent more likely to be hyperactive and to have emotional and behavioral problems.
"But the most revealing news is this game changer: Yale University professor, John Wargo, Ph.D. led a recently released study that connects prenatal cell phone usage with a higher incidence of ADHD symptoms . . .

"If somebody came up with a device that could (a) end world hunger, (b) forestall nuclear war for all time and (c) erase the cast of Jersey Shore from the memory of the man - I doubt that person would get the kind of "news" coverage the Apple corporation gets anytime it has a hiccup.

The whole group during continuous exposure was significantly higher than during sham exposure. The results of this analysis indicate that the physiological response to EMF exposure from mobile phone was mostly related to type of exposure (continuous or intermittent).

What is happening in our classrooms?"One of the best definitions of concentration is, "wherever you are, be there."

"As the number of students using cellular phones in school has grown, situations have arisen when I had to stop a student from using his/her device in class. In those moments, I had to stop teaching and helping other students and instead deal with the cellphone use. Despite the TDSB ban on the use of cellphones in schools, some students continued using their devices at lunch time, before class, and between classes.

"In spring 2011, TDSB Trustees voted to lift the ban on cellphone use. This came to a vote as a result of a proposal made by two Student Trustees and, surprisingly, without consultation with teachers even though teachers would be subject to direct consequences from this decision.

"Allowing young students to use cellphones at any time--especially in school--not only causes many unnecessary environmental and health hazards but also encourages and increases inappropriate moral, ethical and social behaviours in school settings (and elsewhere).

"Since September 2011, as the result of the new cellphone policy, and despite administration's clear message of not using the device without the teacher's permission, and despite several big signs reminding students to turn off their cellphones prior to entering the class, my classes are disrupted at least once each day because a student is texting. This causes extra work and additional classroom management issues for me . . .

Do Cell Phones Cause Acoustic Neuroma?

Tinnitus Info CenterEditor's Note: Acoustic neuromas are non-cancerous tumors found in the brain and are accompanied by hearing loss and tinnitus. You can read more about the nature of <a href="http://www.tinnitusformula.com/infocenter/articles/conditions/neuroma.aspx" title="acoust neur">Acoustic Neuromas</a> in our Tinnitus Information Center.

"There has been a good deal of discussion in scientific circles recently over the concern that radio-frequency (RF) radiation, from cell phone usage, may cause damage to the human brain in the form of an acoustic neuroma.

"The incidence of acoustic neuroma among tinnitus patients is approximately one in one thousand individuals as opposed to one in one hundred thousand in the general population. This is the reason many ENT physicians require an MRI of their tinnitus patients; to rule out the possibility of acoustic neuroma.

"One of the primary symptoms is hearing loss and tinnitus, usually occurring in only one ear. Acoustic neuromas are rare, non-malignant growths that occur on the auditory nerve leading from the cochlea to the brain. They are slow growing, developing over many years, and are not cancerous. They do not spread but continue growing from the point where they begin.

"They can be very dangerous, however, if left undiagnosed. As they grow they may begin to press against the brain, causing pressure on the brainstem and endangering vital functions necessary to life . . .

"To be sure, there are clinical studies that show cell phones do not cause acoustic neuroma or other brain tumors. However, the majority of these studies were conducted on users of less than ten years . . .

"Those at highest risk of suffering long-term consequences are children, who are now beginning to use cell phones at 8 to 10 years old . . .

Children Using Cell Phones May be Exposed to Double the FCC's RF Exposure Limit"Over 5 billion people worldwide, about 80 percent of the world's population, now has a cell phone. "In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) determines maximum allowed exposures from cell phone radiation, a determination that has the potential to impact public health on a massive scale, especially in light of increasing evidence that exposure to such radiation may cause cancer, brain changes and other health problems. "That the FCC is in charge of this regulation is in and of itself perplexing, considering the FCC states: " ... the FCC's primary jurisdiction does not lie in the health and safety area, and it must rely on other agencies and organizations for guidance in these matters." "Well, according to a new report by Om Gandhi, PhD, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Utah and colleagues, "Exposure Limits: The Underestimation of absorbed cell phone radiation, especially in children," the FCC standards are based on a one-size-fits-all-model that seriously underestimates RF exposures to those most vulnerable, including children...."

Dr. Neil Cherry, Lincoln University, New Zealand 16/12/02<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 0cm; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; "><em>An important 2002 report containing information about the cardiac effects (arrhythmia, hypertension, blood pressure fluctuations . . . ) of cell phones and Wi-Fi on young people. </em></p>Abstract:"The heart is a muscular organ whose regular coordinated contraction, called a heart
beat, is regulated by an electrical pulse that initiates a cascade of calcium ions that
carry the message into all the heart cells to initiate the contraction of the heart beat.
Therefore it is biologically plausible that natural and artificial electromagnetic fields will
interfere with the heart activity. It has been shown that external ELF fields cause
altered calcium-concentrations in neurons and heart cells. Altered blood pressure is
associated with the Schumann Resonance signal, along with its modulation of human
heart disease and mortality rates in a homeostatic manner. Electrical and electronic
workers, radio/TV workers are shown to have increased risks of heart disease and
mortality. We all live in electromagnetic fields which act to contribute to increase the
rate of cardiac disease and death. A new high risk factor is the usage of a cellphone.
Cellphones have been shown to interfere with electronic pacemakers. Therefore it is
very reasonable that they will interfere with biological pacemakers, that is, our hearts.
The use of a cellphone is associated with significant increase of blood pressure. This is
a symptom of hypertension and shows that there is a cardiac risk factor. This risk factor
is strongly confirmed in the context of the Schumann Resonance signal effects,
electrical workers effects and altered cardiac functions in radio, TV and radar exposed
workers . . .

We also learned that some students in schools with Wi-Fi experience a racing heart. Cardiologist, Dr. Stephen Sinatra, believes that those who have undiagnosed heart conditions may be particularly vulnerable to radio frequency radiation.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.4em; ">"In the past we were concerned about the radiation from a microwave oven affecting heart monitors. Those heart monitors have been improved and are now shielded against radio frequency radiation. Our hearts are NOT shielded and our exposure to radio frequency radiation includes not only microwave ovens but mobile phones, cell phone antennas, wireless routers, smart meters, wireless computer games, blue tooth, and wireless baby monitors.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.4em; ">"Our study was criticized and the claim was made that our results were due to electromagnetic interference (EMI).</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.4em; ">"EMI refers to disruption of an electronic circuit with an electromagnetic signal. A common example is the static you hear as you drive under high voltage transmission lines with your radio tuned to an AM station. The static on the radio is EMI.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.4em; ">"In our experiment the radiation from the cordless phone may have affected the receiver, placed near the heart, creating spurious results. If this were the case, the signal would interfere each time but that did not happen. We were convinced our results were real (i.e. that we were recording changes in the heart rather than changes in the equipment) but the criticism of EMI was worth testing.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.4em; ">"Was there a critical distance where the radiation from the cordless phone interfered with the equipment we were using?</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.4em; ">"So we designed an experiment to test for EMI. The results are in our new video. Click <a title="video-MIcrowave Radiation Affects the Heart: Are the results read or are they due to interference?" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-mw_nCJWs4" target="_blank" style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; text-decoration: underline; color: #243749; ">here</a> to watch the video.</p><p style="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; line-height: 1.4em; ">NOTE: There is an error in our previous video (2010). We refer to the cordless phone as a DECT phone. Technically DECT phones radiate between 1880 and 1930 MHz and the phone we used provides a signal at 2400 MHz. We do have DECT phones in North America but they operate at a different frequency than those in Europe. DECT 6.0 phones in U.S. and Canada operate at 1.9 GHz.</p>

Cardis: Another Interphone Study"January 6, 2012. It is turning out not to be a good year for mobile phone users and for the naysayers who are trying to convince everyone that mobile phones are safe.
"The long-awaited <a href="http://citizensforsafetechnology.org/Risk-of-brain-tumours-in-relation-to-estimated-RF-dose-from-mobile-phones,28,1751" title="cardis study">Cardis study</a>, published January 2, 2012 in Occupational Environmental Medicine, concludes that there is an increased risk of glioma (a type of brain tumor) in long-term mobile phone users with high RF (radio frequency) exposure and a lower risk for meningioma (a tumor of the membrane surrounding the brain). Indeed the risk for meningiomas was statistically significant in one analysis (after 7-years for group with highest exposure that included 21 cases and 51 controls).
"This study, unlike other studies, attempted to estimate the amount of radiation at the site of the tumour.

" . . . "Tumours were located primarily in the part of the brain receiving the maximum RF exposure. While there are many types of potential errors in this type of work, the results agree with previous studies showing an increased risk of tumours on the side of the head receiving the greatest RF exposure for heavy mobile phone users.

"This study included data from five countries-Australia, Canada, France, Israel and New Zealand-and, in this line-up, Canada faired the worst for gliomas (statistically significant increased risk of 248%) and New Zealand faired the worst for meningiomas (452% increased risk marginally insignificant at p=0.05) . . .

A rare autumn snowstorm raises doubts about the reliability of the wireless cell phone system in the event of a widespread power failure that's likely to occur during a natural disaster."The late autumn snowfall has laid bare the Achilles heel of the wireless phone communication system in Connecticut.

"With the widespread failure of Connecticut Light and Power Company's electric grid caused by falling trees and limbs on Oct. 27, cell phone systems that relied on it for electric power fell silent in many areas.

"Unlike the hardwired phone system built by Southern New England Telephone Co. over the decades since the telephone was invented, and that has centralized battery backup systems, each cell tower and switching station of the cell phone system operates independently and must have its own power source to operate if the electric grid fails.

"With cell towers having no backup power in many areas of the state, those who have come to rely on its convenience found no signal bars on their phones, fully charged or otherwise. It wasn't just personal calls that weren't going through, the 911-system also took a hit . . .

Neurology and Neurophysiology 2011 Research Article - Hallberg and MorganIt is too early to predict future rates of brain cancer, but these
preliminary findings suggest that we should prepare for about a
doubled brain cancer incidence rate and possibly as high as 25 times the
incidence we have today. One result of such a worldwide increase in
brain cancers would be a dramatic shortage of neurosurgeons leading
to increased mortality. Any statement about harmless cell phones
based on only 5-10 years of use has no scientific basis due to the long
latency times involved. The main conclusions from this study are:
1. Brain and CNS cancer has been increasing in many countries
since roughly 1950, possibly due to the introduction of immune
disturbing technologies such as electricity.
2. During recent years Norway, and some counties of Sweden
show signs of an increase in brain cancer incidence rates while
Denmark, Finland and the USA have not shown signs of an
accelerating increase. The stability of the USA incidence rates
may be due to a later start of cell phone use, combined with
a slower increase in prevalence. Also because the USA only
began collecting cancer data in 1975 (decades later than the
Nordic countries), no information is available if there was an
increased brain cancer rate similar to the Nordic countries.
3. Based on reported incidence rates during the 20th century we
conclude that the latency time for brain cancer to develop
from an initial damage is over 30 years. It is erroneous to make
optimistic projections for the future based on cancer statistics
covering time spans of only 5 to 10 years.
4. The recent trend breaks we have noticed in Norway and in
parts of Sweden may be regarded as a warning. If cell phones
are used in rural areas then we can expect to see drastically
increasing rates of brain cancer within the next few decades in
rural areas.
5. There are many actions that manufacturers can take to
minimize cell phone radiation exposures.
Ericsson and Nokia registered patents in 1997 [33] to limit
the maximum output power from cell phones to levels
below current values of 2W or 1W (900 MHz, 1800 MHz,
respectively).
Antennae can be designed to radiate away from the users
instead of current designs which radiate omni-directionally
which results in a substantial proportion of the cell phone
radiation unnecessarily being absorbed by the head and body.
The speaker used to place the cell phone against the ear can
be replaced by a wired headset thereby removing the need to
place a radiating device immediately against the head.
6. There are many actions that individuals can take to minimize
cellphone radiation exposures . . .<ul><li>When on a call, use a wired headset (not a wireless headset
such as a Bluetooth), or use in speaker-phone mode, or send
text messages. Keep the cell phone away from your body
(particularly pant/trouser or shirt pockets) or use a belt
holster designed to shield the body from cellphone radiation,
when not in use (stand-by mode). </li></ul><ul><li>Avoid use in a moving car, train, bus, or in rural areas at
some distance from a cell tower (AKA mast or base station)
as any of these uses will increase the power of the cellphone's
radiation. </li></ul><ul><li>Use the cellphone like an answering machine. Keep it off until
you want to see who has called. </li></ul><ul><li>Use a corded land-line phone, whenever possible, instead of
a wireless phone. </li></ul><ul><li>Avoid use inside of buildings, particularly with steel
structures. </li></ul><ul><li>Do not allow your children to sleep with a cell phone beneath
their pillow or at the bedside. </li></ul><ul><li>Do not allow your children to use a cell phone except in
emergencies.</li></ul>

DNA Impacts from Mobile Phones Implicated in New Analysis"December 24, 2011, Berkeley, CA, USA &amp; Stockholm, Sweden. An important new analysis, <a href="http://www.omicsonline.org/2155-9562/2155-9562-S5-003.pdf" title="study DNA imp">The Potential Impact of Mobile Phone Use on Trends in Brain and CNS Tumors</a>, was published today in the journal Neurology &amp; Neurophysiology.""The study raises very serious concerns about the potential for a large increase in brain cancer incidence, resulting from widespread mobile phone use. The steep increase in brain cancer will begin in approximately 15 years according to the projections.

"The paper, by researchers Orjan Hallberg in Sweden and L. Lloyd Morgan in the U.S., first reviews biological effects from mobile phone use reported in peer-reviewed studies, such as increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier, deleterious effects on sperm, double strand breaks in DNA, stress gene activation (indicating an exposure to a toxin), and increased risk of an acoustic nerve tumor (acoustic neuroma) and brain cancer after 10 or more years of mobile phone use. It then considered two established mechanisms for the development of brain cancer--that mobile phone use decreases the efficiency of the repair of mutated DNA and that mobile phone use increases the rate of DNA mutations . . ."

New York Times - Health"Hospitals and doctors' offices, hoping to curb medical error, have invested heavily to put computers, smartphones and other devices into the hands of medical staff for instant access to patient data, drug information and case studies.

"But like many cures, this solution has come with an unintended side effect: doctors and nurses can be focused on the screen and not the patient, even during moments of critical care. And they are not always doing work; examples include a neurosurgeon making personal calls during an operation, a nurse checking airfares during surgery and a poll showing that half of technicians running bypass machines had admitted texting during a procedure . . .
"It is not, unfortunately, uncommon to see them doing any number of things with that computer beyond patient care," Dr. Luczycki said, including checking e-mail and studying or entering logs on a separate case. He said that when he was in training, he was admonished to not even study a textbook in surgery, so he could focus on the rhythm and subtleties of the procedures.

"When he uses computers in the intensive care unit, he regularly sees what his colleagues were doing before him.

"Amazon, Gmail, I've seen all sorts of shopping, I've seen eBay," he said. "You name it, I've seen it . . . "

2008 - The health of the following generations is in danger (Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection)"For the first time in history, we face a situation when most children and teenagers in the world are
continuously exposed to the potentially adverse influence of the electromagnetic fields (EMF) from mobile
phones.
"Electromagnetic field is an important biotropic factor, affecting not just a human health in general,
but also the processes of the higher nervous activity, including behavior and thinking. Radiation directly
affects human brain when people use mobile phones.
"Despite the recommendations, listed in the Sanitary Rules of the Ministry of Health, which insist that
persons under 18 years should not use mobile phones . . . children and
teenagers became the target group for the marketing the mobile communications.
"The current safety standards for exposure to microwaves from the mobile phones have been
developed for the adults and don't consider the characteristic features of the children's organism. The WHO
considers the protection of the children's health from possible negative influence of the EMF of the mobile
phones as a highest priority task. This problem has also been confirmed by the Scientific Committee of the
European Commission, by national authorities of the European and Asian countries, by participants of the
International scientific conferences on biological effects of the EMF. . .

Science, Spin and the Truth Behind Interphone - August 2009"Cellphones and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern has been prepared to enable balanced
reporting on this important subject. It provides information on scientific findings from studies
on the risk of brain tumors from cellphone use. It includes studies independent of industry
funding as well as telecommunications industry funded studies. Further, it includes
background information on the soon to be published Telecom-funded Interphone study.

"In particular, the report's purpose is to inform journalists and government officials of the
independent scientific findings that raise red flags, and also to address the design flaws in the
Interphone study protocol that results in an underestimation of the risk of brain tumors from
cellphone use. This report is fully referenced to enable further investigations and for detailed
fact checking. "We urge all readers to review the results from independent studies on the risk of brain tumors
from cellphone use discussed in this report, and to become familiar with the Interphone
study's design flaws . . . . We also urge readers to learn about the Precautionary Principle actions . . .
that can be implemented by governments and by individuals to greatly reduce cellphone
radiation exposure . . .

What You Can Learn From the Birds and Bees

Simple ways to avoid the growing problems associated with man-made frequencies."What do bees, birds (not just canaries), and humans have in common? We're all sensitive to the rapidly proliferating expansion of man-made energy from antennae, cell and cordless phones, digital devices, electrical and electronic equipment, microwaves, radio waves, PDAs, satellite TVs, and wireless.
"Birds will avoid microwave radiation if they can; they collapse within seconds if they can't. And bee colony collapse--a worldwide phenomenon with potentially devastating impact on our food supply since these insects are prime pollinators--has recently been linked to electromagnetic fields (EMFs), rapidly proliferating throughout the world today.
"When cell phones were placed near hives, the radiation they emit (900 to1,800 MHz) was enough to prevent bees from returning there, reports research conducted at Landau University in Germany. Both the brain and body of the honeybee can vibrate from man-made frequencies in mobile phones, explains physicist and science teacher Barrie Trower, scientific advisor to the Radiation Research Trust in the UK.
"In fact, ants, bats, butterflies, cattle, frogs, plants (including trees), and whales suffer from microwave transmission from cell phones, Blue-tooth, TETRA, and WiFi. Only humans choose to expose themselves daily to electromagnetic fields (EMFs).
"For the past 20 years, a small but growing number of people are discovering how debilitating this kind of radiation can be. Take, for example, Arthur Firstenberg, a final year med student, who started having symptoms of a heart attack while on surgery rotation. Sure, med school is stressful, but most doctors-to-be don't lose 15 pounds in two weeks for no apparent reason. Or have abnormally low heart rate . . ."

Pulse modulated 900 MHz radiation induction using light, electron microscopy and immunohistochemicals"In the present study we investigated the possible histopathological effects of pulse modulated Radiofrequency (RF) fields on the thyroid gland using light microscopy, electron microscopy and immunohistochemical methods . . ."Results: Morphological analyses revealed hypothyrophy of the gland in the 900 MHz RF exposure group. The results
indicated that thyroid hormone secretion was inhibited by the RF radiation. In addition, we also observed formation of
apoptotic bodies and increased caspase-3 and caspase-9 activities in thyroid cells of the rats that were exposed to modulated
RF fields.
Conclusion: The overall findings indicated that whole body exposure to pulse-modulated RF radiation that is similar to that
emitted by global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile phones can cause pathological changes in the thyroid
gland by altering the gland structure and enhancing caspase-dependent pathways of apoptosis . . ."

How the Telecom Industry Seeks to Confuse About the Dangers of Cell Phones (Mercola)Story at-a-glance <ul><li>A new BMJ study being widely circulated in the
media claims to have found no association
between long-term use of cell phones and brain or
central nervous system tumors, but the study was
deeply flawed and misleading. </li></ul><ul><li>The BMJ study excluded the heaviest cell phone
users -- more than 300,000 business users, which
represented nearly 30 percent of the original group
- which skews the results significantly. </li></ul><ul><li>A cell phone "user," as defined by the study, was
anyone who made one call a week for 6 months,
which again does not reflect the true risk of heavy
cell phone use that is commonplace today. </li></ul><ul><li>Cell phone studies are commonly spun by industry
to support cell phone safety, when in fact closer
analysis reveals increased cancer and other
health risks. </li></ul><ul><li>The science is very clear, and many worldwide
health agencies, now concur, that the cancer risk
from cell phones is real, and steps should be
taken immediately to minimize your risk.</li></ul>

Use of mobile phones and risk of brain tumours: update of Danish cohort studyPowerwatch says:"Our opinion:

"This misleading study has many flaws and serious confounders and should not give anyone reassurance that mobile phone use is not associated with an increase in brain tumours. In our opinion the paper should not have been published in this form -- it should have failed peer-review. We recommend that it is disregarded as low quality science.
"Denis Henshaw, Emeritus Professor of Human Radiation Effects at the University of Bristol agrees with this view: "This seriously flawed study misleads the public and decision makers about the safety of mobile phone use. I consider that their claims are worthless."
"What the BMJ Press Release says:

"There is no link between long-term use of mobile phones and tumours of the brain or central nervous system, finds new research published on bmj.com today. In what is described as the largest study on the subject to date, Danish researchers found no evidence that the risk of brain tumours was raised among 358,403 mobile phone subscribers over an 18-year period."

MobileWiseMobileWise is a UK charity, raising awareness of mobile phone health issues, and promoting action to protect public health. More information can be found at <a href="http://www.mobilewise.org" title="link mobilewise">www.mobilewise.org</a>"The substantial body of evidence highlighted in this report suggests that mobile phone use may be linked with a
range of important health problems. These include, but are not limited to, brain tumours and the evidence has
serious implications for public health.
Although further research is needed, it makes sense to err on the side of caution in the meantime. The long
induction period for brain tumours and some of the other possible health effects means that it could take many
years to fully understand the risks. We know from our experience with smoking and asbestos that waiting for certainty
of harm is a dangerous policy. Even now we do not have a complete picture of those risks, despite many decades
of scientific study.
We have an opportunity now to promote safety measures, mindful of the benefits of mobile phone technology but
reflecting the potentially serious risks, particularly for children.
This report does much to elucidate the scientific evidence and policy issues. It is now incumbent on all of us engaged
in the task of protecting public health to help ensure the public is provided with the information and guidance it
needs to minimise its risks.

Environmental Health Trust and Other Experts Expose Major Flaws in New Danish Study Claiming No Significant Cancer Risks from Cell Phone Use."The new report misrepresents risk of brain tumors for the very same reason the original Danish study was previously criticized. Removing more than 300,000 cell phone users who were business users from the analysis (almost 30% of the original group), defining as a user anyone making one call a week for 6 months, and ignoring the fact that phone calls were more expensive and shorter years ago, reduces the group's average exposure and makes it very unlikely to find any evidence of increased risk.

"Secondly, the report analyzed the rates of brain tumors that occurred between 1990-2007 in those who began using cellphones after 1987, compared to those who were non-subscribers when the study started. This also understates risk, because most of those who began as 'non-subscribers' to cell phone service (i.e. the 'controls' at the time the cohort was collected) became cell phone users later on, and accumulated almost as many years (on average per person) as the 'exposed' subscribers. Hence, the comparison to the population not contained in the subscriber sample is a comparison between two exposed groups. When Michael Kundi and colleagues from the Medical University of Vienna mathematically corrected for this concern in the earlier Danish study, they found a significantly increased risk for brain tumors.

"Cell phone users who began using cell phones after 1995 and those under the age of 30 were not considered 'subscribers' in the study (as with the business users and pay-as-you go users), thus significantly diluting the results and underestimating the risk.

"An accompanying editorial on the study by Anders Albom, notes several design limits of this study and repeats a concern raised about this problem in 2005, where he noted: "Not being able to include corporate users, likely to be among the earliest and heaviest users of mobile phones, also weakens the statistical power of the study."

"Finally, and importantly, the current, updated Danish study being published today in fact did find increased risk, even though the study is currently being promoted to the media as if it did not . . ."

Press Release - Environmental Health Trust"A scholarly article on cell phone safety published online October 17, 2011, in the journal Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine reports the finding that cell phones used in the shirt or pants pocket exceed FCC exposure guidelines and that children absorb twice as much microwave radiation from phones as do adults.

"The paper, titled "Exposure Limits: The underestimation of absorbed cell phone radiation, especially in children," notes that the industry-designed process for evaluating microwave radiation from phones results in children absorbing twice the cellphone radiation to their heads, up to triple in their brain's hippocampus and hypothalamus, greater absorption in their eyes, and as much as 10 times more in their bone marrow when compared to adults . . ."<a _mce_href="http://www.saferphonezone.com/site/wp-admin/post.php?post=1017&action=edit&message=6" href="http://www.saferphonezone.com/a-summary-exposure-limits-the-underestimation-of-absorbed-cellphone-radiation-especially-in-children/" style="color: #1f4686; ">Click here to a view a summary of the paper</a>

Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine"The existing cell phone certification process uses a plastic model of the head called the Specific
Anthropomorphic Mannequin (SAM), representing the top 10% of U.S. military recruits in 1989
and greatly underestimating the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) for typical mobile phone users,
especially children . . ."SAM uses a fluid having
the average electrical properties of the head that cannot indicate differential absorption of
specific brain tissue, nor absorption in children or smaller adults. The SAR for a 10-year old is up
to 153% higher than the SAR for the SAM model. When electrical properties are considered,
a child's head's absorption can be over two times greater, and absorption of the skull's bone
marrow can be ten times greater than adults. Therefore, a new certification process is needed
that incorporates different modes of use, head sizes, and tissue properties. Anatomically based
models should be employed in revising safety standards for these ubiquitous modern devices
and standards should be set by accountable, independent groups . . .
"We have shown that children and small adults absorb significantly more cell
phone radiation than SAM estimates. Accordingly, contemporary cell phone
standards for all of the world's more than five billion cell phones do not protect the
young or the 97% of the population with heads smaller than SAM. Until SAR
standards have been revised, Israel . . . Finland . . . France . . . India . . . and the U.K . . . recommend
limited use by children, using wired headsets, hands-free kits, texting, and keeping
the mobile phone away from the head and from the body to substantially lower
exposures with current cell phones.
Governments all over the world should urgently require that industry sell cell
phones that work only with headsets (sans speakers and microphones) . . .The long-term impact of cell phone radiation is a matter that merits major
research investment and serious public scrutiny. Anatomically based models should
be employed in revising safety standards for these ubiquitous modern devices.
Standard setting should not be the province of non-governmental, non-accountable
agencies, such as ICNIRP which has been heavily funded by industry, but should be
carried out by governmental agencies accountable to the public or by independent
experts accountable to governments . . ."

Open letter Contributed by Carol Hughes, MP Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing"In the summer of 2010 I wrote about a group of parents in Collingwood who were
fighting to have Wi-Fi, taken out of their children's school. I heard their story
while sitting as a member of a parliamentary committee investigating the safety of
the microwave radiation emitted by wireless devices like cell phones and modems. "The committee heard contradictory evidence and warnings from scientists, groups
and individuals. There were claims that Canada's code that regulates the limit of
radiation any device can emit was not strict enough - Health Canada officials
disputed this. "Much has changed in the story since that column . . ."

Letter to journalist who is touting toddler apps for iPads and smart-phones . . .<em>"In a pinch, it's a great babysitter," says Mariah Sutton, mother of a 2 1/2 year old. "A mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do!"

"Savvy software developers aim to assuage parental guilt and shame by offering educational toddler apps for iPads and smart-phones that are highly interactive, colourful and fun, and tiny tots are embracing portable digital technology like a favourite blanket. According to BlogHer/Parenting, 25% of toddlers will have used a smartphone by age 2. By preschool age, 33% will have used a laptop or digital camera . . ." </em>Joanne Richard in the Kingston Whig, October 14, 2011
Dear Ms. Richard,

I was very alarmed to see the afore-mentioned headline and photo of a
baby holding an iphone, then find no mention at all about the serious
health effects associated with radio frequency radiation. As a
respected and informed journalist, you should be educating your
readers on this issue.

In May of this year, this type of radiation emitted by cellphones and
other wireless devices was declared a possible class 2B carcinogen.
Long before that, epidemiologist Dr. Devra Davis Ph.D, MPH of the
Environmental Oncology Unit at University of Pittsburgh warned of the
dangers of exposure to these well-loved devices, especially children
with their thinner, developing skulls. She has written a book on the
subject, 'Disconnect: The Truth About Cellphone Radiation'. There is
a growing body of scientific information on the toxicity of radio-
frequency radiation by other doctors and researchers, such as Dr.
Magda Havas of Trent U., Dr. Sam Milham, MPH, and Dr. David Carpenter,
Co-Editor of the Bioinitiative Report (www.BioInitiative.org) to name
a few.

I am a teacher who is currently off work because the wireless routers
in the schools make me ill. I have developed Electrical
hypersensitivity (EHS), diagnosed at Women's College Hospital in
Toronto.

Perhaps you could follow up on this article, discussing these perils
of the technology, not just the social ones. We as a society have the
duty to protect our precious children.
Sincerely,
Nancy Miller, OCT

Scientists played down brain tumour risks in children.

Manipulation of research regarding mobile phones and cancer risks"A new industry-sponsored study on brain tumour risks in children who use mobile
phones was presented to the media in July 2011. The press-release claimed that the
results were "reassuring" whereas the study itself indicated an increased risk. Apart from
playing down the results, there is evidence that the scientists also manipulated the
research in order to underestimate the risks, especially of cordless phones . . . "Cefalo might have been designed to play down risks, but instead of challenging the findings of
the international Interphone group and the Swedish Hardell group, it reconfirms them. These
studies made IARC, the cancer research agency of the World Health Organisation, classify
mobile phone radiation as "possibly carcinogenic" in May 2011. "There is now more than enough evidence for an application of the precautionary principle
according to the International EMF Alliance, a public interest NGO representing some 60
grassroots organisations advocating for a regulation and a reduction of electro-pollution.
- The irrational "zero-risk" interpretation of the Cefalo scientists creates doubts and could
postpone preventive measures and cause unnecessary suffering. Mobile phone use has
increased massively among children and teenagers the last decade, and even a small increase
of brain tumour risks is of great concern, says Alex Swinkels, IEMFA board member . . ."

Arab News (Part 1)'Sometimes I stop and think: How did we manage without mobile phones? What a blessing it is to have them! When we are traveling, commuting, stranded on the road or in an emergency, they come in handy. But recently, we have become so dependent on this small talking gadget that we feel helpless without it. Since the 1990s, the mobile phone has become a "must."

"Unfortunately, its use has stretched beyond necessity. Some converse casually for hours with the devices glued to their ears, exchanging niceties, jokes and gossip, oblivious of the potential "dangers" of radiation emissions directed to their poor brains. You can only feel the harmful and irritating effects of radiation when the device becomes unbearably hot against your ear. This kind of abuse has become common to many working and nonworking adults, adolescents and even very young children at home, work, in cars, trains, streets, during exercising and all the time. We see cellular phones stuck to ears or earphones and headsets attached to heads. This sight was barely seen a decade ago in the streets or elsewhere . . ."

North Devon"The boss of one of the Westcountry's leading food companies has called for more research into claims that mobile phones could cause cancer.

"Brian Stein says early research is increasingly indicating the danger of excessive mobile phone use and Wi-Fi networks to some users, especially children . . .

"Mr Stein, the chief group executive of Samworth Brothers, a partner company of Tamar Foods and Gingsters in Callington, South East Cornwall, began suffering the effects of low-frequency radiation six years ago when he experienced pain when using his mobile phone."I began getting weird sensations in my ear if I went near a computer or TV, any electrical equipment with a microchip," he said. I took the view that I was a freak and kept quiet, but it was difficult because I couldn't drive a modern car with computers on board . . ."

To avoid breast cancer, take that cellphone out of your bra

Devra Davis<em>So . . . October is "Breast Cancer Awareness Month." What's missing?</em>"For many young women today, tucking cellphones in the bra has become a cool, hip way to have simple access to these essential devices. They can jog, drive, shop or sit in darkened movie theaters, quickly responding to tingled vibrations at their breast. Most of us have no idea that cellphones are two-way microwave radios that should not be kept directly on the body.

"As the month of breast cancer awareness, October finds the media packed with warnings about the disease. What's missing from this welcome public attention is the fact that the ways some people are using their phones today could increase their risk of developing breast cancer and other diseases. A cellphone's microwave radiation seeps directly into soft fatty tissue of the breast. That's not a good thing.

"Someone wise once said that there is no cure for stupidity, but ignorance can be cured with knowledge. I sure hope this is the case . . ."

CBS News Video and transcript"Here is a distressing truth:

"The rate of growth of productivity in the United States has been rising much more slowly in the period from 1991 to 2011 than in the 20 years after World War II. That is, output per worker is rising, but much more slowly than it used to be.

"Why that is has been the subject of much debate among economists. Is it the aging of the labor force? Movement of manufacturing to China?

"No one knows for sure, but I have a suggestion. Maybe no one is getting any work done because we're all talking on our cell phones and playing with gadgets online and texting each other . . ."<em>And cell phones themselves are only one part of the gargantuan problem, the most unethical of which is the involuntary unwitting exposures from infrastructure, from cell towers to public Wi-Fi to wireless smart meters to . . .</em><em></em>

Dr. Magda Havas"A hair stylist in Toronto noticed discolourations on the scalp of adolescents. The marks were often in the temporal lobe near the ear although some were on the top or back of the head. Since most of the blemishes were covered by hair they were difficult to see.
"Most, if not all of these students, had their own mobile phone. They were between the ages of 8 and 13. Most likely they comb their own hair or visit a hair stylist who may or may not notice these blemishes. "Blemishes on the scalp may be innocuous (moles, birth marks, irritated hair follicles, insect bites, and scratches) or they may be the first signs of a malignant tumor (melanoma). The message for parents is to check their children for head blemishes and to notify their family doctors if any resemble melanomas. This is especially important if your child uses a mobile phone . . ."

Toronto Sun, July 2011: Kristy Kirkup, Parliamentary Bureau"OTTAWA - An international study which debunks research linking cellphones to cancer risks received major funding from wireless manufacturers.

"The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radio frequency emitted by wireless devices as possibly carcinogenic, but a panel of international scientists recently published a study challenging these findings.

"The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection - composed of scientists from Britain, the United States and Sweden - said evidence is mounting against the hypothesis cellphones may cause cancer despite the findings of IARC.

"But in the study's conflict of interest disclaimer, the panel acknowledged it received support from the wireless industry to conduct the research. A number of organizations, including the Mobile Manufacturers' Forum, were cited as sources of funding.
"The authors, however, maintain their 'freedom to design, conduct, interpret, and publish research was not compromised by any controlling sponsor.' . . . "

Karl Maret MD with Dr. Mercola"One of the reasons I started this newsletter was to decrease the time it takes for important public health information to
become widely accepted in the conventional media. "My intention is to give you a huge head start with this information, frequently years or decades prior to this knowledge
becoming known, so you can prevent serious damage to your health that would otherwise occur from behaviors you
didn't realize were harmful until it was too late. There's no doubt in my mind that we will eventually see an explosion of
brain tumors, attributable to excessive cell phone use.
"But why wait until it's self-evident and undeniable? By then you or your child might be part of the collateral damage of
this ongoing live experiment, that is if you have not been affected already . . ." STORY AT A GLANCE"DNA has been shown to be particularly vulnerable to electromagnetic fields of all kinds. Qualified experts state there is "irrefutable evidence" that electromagnetic fields and microwave radiation from cell phones cause biological changes. "Cell phone radiation triggers brain cells to metabolize glucose at an increased rate, indicating cell activation. Studies show increased risk of many forms of cancer from long-term cell phone use, including brain cancer, tumors on the acoustic nerve and the meninges, salivary gland and eye cancers, testicular cancers and leukemia. Using cell phone two hours per month for 10 years or longer approximately doubles your risk of developing a brain tumor. Children are at greatest risk . . ."

Sample Study: Mobile Phone Use and Brain Tumors in Children and Adolescents: A Multicenter Case-Control Study<em>False or biased press coverage of scientific findings seems to plague journalism these days. What follows is a basic 2-page primer for lay people and journalists to avoid the possible pitfalls of reporting on Scientific findings. The tendency to report an existing opinion without first understanding how scientific findings are presented is tempting. Quicker and easier. However, much understanding can be gained by taking a little time to look between the lines. </em>Reporting Scientific FindingsClick <a href="http://www.magdahavas.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/rooslidjr244.pdf" title="study" style="color: blue !important; text-decoration: underline !important; cursor: text !important; ">here</a> for pdf of sample study."If you want to know what is really happening with cell phones and cancer -
you need to learn how to read between the lines. That is what scientists do.
They go beyond the abstract and read the document. They examine the
results and compare their own conclusions to those of the authors'. Some
authors who are dealing with controversial, contentious, politically charged
issues or those who have a bias-financial or otherwise-may deemphasize a
finding to minimize backlash directed at them or their study. But, if the
authors are honest, the document will provide the truth-sometimes buried
between the lines-for other scientists to find. The truth is out there. You
just need to learn how to find it . . ."

Elevated Risk of Brain Tumors Shown in Those Using Cell Phones 3+ Years - Environmental Working Group"Washington, D.C. - Although parents are likely feeling reassured by the first media headlines about a new Swiss study of brain tumor risk in children using cell phones, the findings are actually quite troubling, according to a review by Environmental Working Group . . ."Given that in studies of adult cell phone users a statistically significant increase in cancer risk was observed only in those that looked at exposure periods of longer than 10 years, EWG finds it very troublesome that some elevation of risks for children and teenagers was observed from as little as three years" in the latest research, said EWG senior scientist Olga Naidenko, Ph.D. "These results should be of great interest to parents who want to take a precautionary approach to their children's cell phone use."

Special Reference to Blood-Brain Barrier Function, Neuronal Damage and Possible Physical Mechanisms<em>This is an incredibly important and disconcerting study, especially because there are so many similarities between rats and humans when it comes to neurology. The findings of non-thermal effects would suggest we're in for a body count that will be higher than few people can fathom.</em>"Life on earth was formed during billions of years, exposed to, and shaped by the original
physical forces such as gravitation, cosmic irradiation, atmospheric electric fields and the
terrestrial magnetism. The Schumann resonances at 7.4 Hz are an example of oscillations
possibly important for life . . ."The existing organisms are created to function in harmony with these forces. However,
in the late 19th century mankind introduced the use of electricity, in the early 20th century
long-wave radio and in the 1940-ies short-wave radio. High frequency RF was introduced in
the [fifties] as FM and television and during the very last decades, microwaves of the modern
communication society spread around the world. Today, however, one third of the world's
population is owner of the microwave-producing mobile phones and an even larger number
is exposed to the cordless RF emitting systems. To what extent are all living organisms
affected by these, almost everywhere present radio frequency fields? And what will be the
effects of many years of continuing exposure?
"Since 1988 our group has studied the effects upon the mammalian blood-brain barrier
(BBB) in rats by non-thermal radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). These have
been shown to cause significantly increased leakage of the rats' own blood albumin through
the BBB of exposed rats . . ."<ul><li>Introduction</li><li>Microwaves</li><li>The Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) of the Mammalian Brain</li><li>Neuronal Damage</li><li>Mechanisms behind the effects of electromagnetic fields upon biology</li><li>Transmembral transportation - Solitons and microwaves </li><li>DNA transcription process</li><li>Solitons hiding in DNA and their role in RNA transcription</li><li>Conclusion</li></ul>

A report by Dr. Lynn Quiring - May 2008"Electromagnetic pollution may be the most significant form of pollution human
activity has produced this century, all the more dangerous because it is invisible and
insensible."
That statement was made by Andrew Weil, MD, noted best-selling author of eight books, a Harvard Medical School graduate, and internationally recognized expert on medicinal herbs and integrative medicine. When you read the rest of this report you'll understand why his statement is completely on target. Some facts behind cell phone use: <ul><li>Talking on a cell phone as little as 500 minutes a month can increase the probability of brain cancer by 300% </li><li>Cell phone radiation has been shown to damage and break living DNA </li><li>Cell phone radiation causes leakage of the blood-brain barrier allowing toxins to damage sensitive brain tissue </li><li>Cell phones worn by men on a belt clip can reduce sperm count by 30% </li><li>After using a cell phone for six years the risk of developing an acoustic neuroma (a tumor of the auditory nerve) increases by 50% </li><li>Cell phone radiation increases estrogen and adrenaline levels in the body disrupting hormonal balance </li><li>A two-minute call alters a child's brain function for an hour </li></ul>"Russians Knew About This A Long Time Ago Between 1953 and 1976 the Russians directed electromagnetic radiation directly at the
US embassy in Moscow. The radiation was a continual round-the-clock bombardment.
Soon the embassy staff became ill. The US ambassador to Russia developed leukemia
and was forced to return to the United States. His replacement also developed leukemia
and he, too, had to be replaced. Staff members continually became ill and complained of
memory loss, brain fog, loss of focus and insomnia during their stay in the embassy.
"Radio Frequency Sickness Syndrome" was a condition the Russians had earlier
identified in experiments. So they knew what they were doing. They actually used
electromagnetic radiation as a weapon against the United States embassy staff. Yet, today
our government and the industries involved promote this same technology as safe and
convenient. Convenient it is but safe it is not . . ."

Study of 13,000 children exposes link between use of handsets and later behavioural problems U.K. 2008May 2008"Women who use mobile phones when pregnant are more likely to give birth to children with behavioural problems, according to authoritative research.

"A giant study, which surveyed more than 13,000 children, found that using the handsets just two or three times a day was enough to raise the risk of their babies developing hyperactivity and difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships by the time they reached school age. And it adds that the likelihood is even greater if the children themselves used the phones before the age of seven.

"The results of the study, the first of its kind, have taken the top scientists who conducted it by surprise. But they follow warnings against both pregnant women and children using mobiles by the official Russian radiation watchdog body, which believes that the peril they pose "is not much lower than the risk to children's health from tobacco or alcohol".

"The research - at the universities of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Aarhus, Denmark - is to be published in the July issue of the journal Epidemiology and will carry particular weight because one of its authors has been sceptical that mobile phones pose a risk to health . . .

"The Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection says that use of the phones by both pregnant women and children should be "limited". It concludes that children who talk on the handsets are likely to suffer from "disruption of memory, decline of attention, diminishing learning and cognitive abilities, increased irritability" in the short term, and that longer-term hazards include "depressive syndrome" and "degeneration of the nervous structures of the brain".

Powerwatch 10/06/2011Interphone Study leader Elisabeth Cardis and colleagues have now published a new analysis showing an increased risk of brain cancer close to where you hold a mobile phone to your head.

This shows up in the data from people who have used a mobile phone for more than 7 years. The majority of malignant gliomas (the most common type that has been associated with mobile phone use) are fatal within 3 to 5 years of diagnosis, even with treatment.

The new study claims to be the first to use estimates of RF energy absorbed at the centre of brain tumours as a measure of radio-frequency (RF) dose. An increased risk of glioma was seen in the 20% of users with the highest exposure.

The Canadian PressTORONTO - The Ontario government will examine a World Health Organization warning about a possible link between cellphones and cancer, but won't take any immediate action to warn consumers, Health Promotion Minister Margarett Best said Wednesday.

"The United Nations agency reported Tuesday that the type of electromagnetic radiation emitted by cellphones and other wireless devices could possibly cause cancer.

"The New Democrats want warning labels slapped on cellphones and smart phones to caution users about the possible increased risk of cancer, but Best said for now she'll consult more experts.

"I will be speaking with the Ontario chief medical officer of health, as well as Health Canada," she said. "It's a very important issue, and we will monitor and continue to monitor the evidence, the new evidence that has been brought forward."

"Scientists with the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radio frequency electromagnetic fields as "possibly carcinogenic to humans,"' based on a higher risk of glioma, a rare but often deadly form of brain tumour . . ."

This is the first of a three-part series on issues related to cell phone radiation."A typical day for Jonathan Hirshon, a San Francisco-based public relations representative, is spent with his iPhone 4 pressed to his head for two or three hours.
"What does he fret about while he's using that phone? He hopes he can make it through an entire conversation without his call being dropped; he hopes his voice is clear enough that the people on the other end of the call can understand him; and he hopes AT&T doesn't take away his unlimited data plan.
"You may not be very surprised to hear that the one thing Hirshon, whose first cell phone was the groundbreaking 1996 Motorola StarTAC, doesn't spend much time worrying about is whether his heavy cell phone use will give him brain cancer. . . "

Public Health, submitted by Christopher Fisher, PhD - May 23, 2011"Prof. Seyhan's work confirms and strengthens the finding that just four hours of exposure to RF-EMF disrupts the ability of human brain cells to repair damaged genes. Other new important work from Australia shows damage to human sperm. "We are deeply concerned about what this could mean for public health," noted Prof Seyhan.
"This work provides a warning signal to all of us. The evidence justifies precautionary measures to reduce the risks for everyone of us," says Prof. Wilhelm Mosgoeller from the Medical University of Vienna who has led European research teams, who found that RF-EMF induce DNA breaks. New studies carried out by scientists in Turkey, Russia and Israel, have investigated a variety of biological effects triggered by cell phones. Two years after false accusations against scientists who described DNA breaks, now the recent results finally show that exposure induced DNA breaks are real. . . "

Some of the federal government's own scientists say that it's not doing enough to determine whether cell phones pose a health risk."Cell phones are everywhere--glued to ears, in children's backpacks, even replacing landlines in millions of homes. Yet the federal government's oversight of cell-phone safety--in particular, the potential health risks of long-term use--is at best informal and at worst slipshod . . ."All of the big cell-phone companies, from Apple to Motorola, include extensive, fine-print warnings--tucked deep inside their product packaging--about the radiation emitted from their devices. But when the city of San Francisco tried to require manufacturers to provide some of that warning information to potential customers before they purchase, the wireless industry sued the city. The case is still pending in federal court . . ."

Consumer Update - October 2010<em>Attached is a manual for the Motorola cellphone, model 120e. Pages 11 to 14 deal with safety information. Beginning at page 152, there is quite explicit information indicating, "The available science does not allow us to conclude that mobile phones are absolutely safe."The Guide goes on to list (pages 64 - 68) several studies showing that wireless phones can have negative consequences for the user's health. . . (pages 68 - 71): </em><em></em><em>"Under the law, FDA does not review the safety of radiation-emitting consumer products such as mobile phones before marketing, as it does with new drugs or medical devices . . .)Neither do Health Canada nor Industry Canada.</em>Excerpts from MOTOROLA MANUAL OCT. 2010"Use hands-free if available and keep the Blackberry at least .98 in. from your body, "including the abdomen of pregnant women and the lower abdomen of teenagers.""A few animal studies, however, have suggested that low levels of RF could accelerate the development of cancer in laboratory animals. In one study, mice genetically altered to be predisposed to developing one type of cancer developed more than twice as many such cancers when they were exposed to RF energy compared to controls.""When 20 types of tumors were considered separately however, an association was found between mobile phone use and one rare type of glioma, neuroepithelliomatous tumors.""None of these tests showed any effect of the RF except for the micronucleus assay, which detects structural effects on the genetic material. The cells in this assay showed changes after exposure to simulated cell phone radiation.""When tumors did exist in certain locations, however, they were more likely to be on the side of the head where the mobile phone was used.""Some people who have used mobile phones have been diagnosed with brain cancer."<p style="margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 10.0px Helvetica"></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">OTTAWA - Green Party leader
Elizabeth May today called on Health Minister Tony Clement to issue an
immediate warning on the potential danger posed by radiation from cell phones
and wireless networks in Canada . . .</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">"There is growing scientific
evidence that exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from cell phones, and
wireless networks can cause significant harm to people, especially children,"
said Ms. May. "Until all the facts are in, it is foolish to turn a blind eye to
the potential health effects of EMR. The Green Party urges the federal
government to apply the precautionary principle and warn citizens of these
risks now."</p>

Clinical/Patient Study- Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York June, 2010"There was a significant correlation between number of cell phone subscriptions and brain tumors. Because increased numbers of both cell phone subscriptions and brain tumors could be due solely to the fact that some states, such as New York, have much larger populations than other states, such as North Dakota, multiple linear regression was performed with number of brain tumors as the dependent variable, cell phone subscriptions, population, mean income (i.e socioeconomic status) and mean age as independent variables. The effect of cell phone subscriptions was significant, and independent of the effect of mean income, population and age."

Environmental Working GroupAn Environmental Working Group (EWG) team has
released a consumer guide on the radiation levels emitted by over 1,000
cell phones sold in the U.S. The guide is the most comprehensive ever
published, and is available online. The guide is based on details of emission levels supplied by cell phone
manufacturers, and enables consumers to make an informed decision about
which phone to buy. The EWG believes a comprehensive guide of this
nature was needed because U.S. laws do not require cell phone
manufacturers to include radiation information on their printed materials
and advertising, making comparisons extremely difficult.

Environmental Health Trust"Our brains are protected by a natural protective layer that prevents it from absorbing harmful chemicals. As with almost all barriers, it is not 100% fail-safe."More than three decades ago, Allan H. Frey, working on an Office of Naval Research contract, discovered that microwave radiation-just like that now produced by cell phones-- relaxes the membrane around the brain . . . "Hearing about this phenomenon, two decades ago, Leif Salford, a neurosurgeon in Sweden, was spurred to ask two questions:

1. Could radio frequency exposure push chemotherapy into the brains of people with brain cancer? 2. How does cell phone exposure to the brain affect healthy, normal people around the world today who are regularly using cell phones?"

Washington Post - February 8, 2011"Oregon state Sen. Chip Shields on Monday introduced a bill that would require retailers to put warning labels on cellphones and packaging of wireless devices, advising consumers of possible risks associated with radio frequency exposure.
"Shields, a Democrat who represents parts of Portland, introduced the legislation along with five other Democratic and Republican state lawmakers, amid growing concern that long-term exposure to cellphones could lead to health problems, including cancer, particularly among youth and children. San Francisco has adopted the nation's first ordinance requiring labeling of radiation data at retail stores -- a rule the wireless industry has fought with a lawsuit against the city . . .

"The scientific consensus from these impartial health organizations is that there are no negative health effects from consumer use of wireless devices," said John Walls, CTIA's vice president of communications. "Warning labels would mislead consumers suggesting that wireless devices are not safe which contradicts the consensus of the leading federal and international health organizations."

"The CTIA has successfully fought legislation in California and Maine over the past year, sending lobbyists to speak at public forums against warning labels. Apple, AT&T, Verizon and the CTIA have also hired locally based lobbyists to fight the legislation that could curb consumers' appetites for cellphones."

updated conclusions and standards"Russian National Committee of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (RNCNIRP) have accepted an important decision on the theme "mobile communication and children`s health." The members of the committee give a prediction of possible illnesses, the possibility of which can be high for children, using modern mobile phones. This decision is based on the results of fundamental researches of biological influence of electromagnetic field, which has been held in Russia during the 40 years and considers the modern data. RNCNIRP considers that the manufacturers should inform the customers about the possible risk for children`s health from using the mobile phone. The point of view of the RNCNIRP is supported by the members of the m

Editorial: American Medical Association report of study by Lai and Hardell"The Majority of the Radio Frequency Energy emitted by a cellular telephone is absorbed by the
hand and head of the user. The total energy absorbed is a function of the specific absorption
rate, duration of use, and the manner in which the phone is used. In addition to concerns about potential harmful effect s of such exposure, such as the issue of risk of brain cancer, change in brain function related to cell phone radio frequencies also is of concern. Studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of cell phone use on brain electrical activities, neurophysiology, and behavior. The study by Volkow and colleagues in this issue of JAMA is the first investigation in humans of glucose metabolism in the brain after cell phone use . . ."

University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine - medpage Today"Holding a cell phone to the ear for an extended period of time increases activity in regions of the brain closest to the antenna, researchers have found.

Glucose metabolism in the orbitofrontal cortex and temporal pole increased significantly when the phone was turned on and muted, compared with when it was off . . ."

<em>The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy. This article includes VIDEO interview.</em>

CNN report on a new government-funded study - Journal of American Medical Association"The radiation emitted after just 50 minutes on a mobile phone increases the activity in brain cells, according to a new government-funded study.
The effects of that brain activity are not known, said the researchers, who called for more study.
Phones that were turned off did not create the same brain activity.
The small study, published in the Journal of American Medical Association, is the first to look specifically at how electromagnetic radiation from cell phones affects glucose metabolism, a normal function, in the brain."

Effects of Cell Phone Radiofrequency Signal Exposure on Brain Glucose Metabolism

American Medical Association - Preliminary Communication<strong>Brain Glucose Elevated by EMR
</strong>"This is an important new study finding that cell phone radiation elevates brain glucose metabolism in the areas of the brain that get the most microwave radiation as measured in healthy human volunteers through PET scans following acute exposure. They showed elevated glucose metabolism after 40 minutes of exposure.
Glucose metabolism can stimulate cell proliferation, and if cells are aberrant and proliferate, then cancer can arise. Increased glucose means that cells are activated and metabolizing at a higher rate, which is why they need more glucose.
The BIG question is what does this mean for the long term for people who are using phones this much every day and begin to do so as toddlers or children. What is not in this paper is the long term impact of this sort of elevation of brain glucose and its implications for people with pre-existing cerebral cortex problems, like Parkinsons, autism, Alzheimers, brain injury . . ."Devra Davis

Warnings and Promotions". . . The bill is in response to the increased public awareness of many independently funded scientific studies that do show a link between cell phone use and brain cancer, DNA and genetic damage, reproductive problems, dementia and other health problems. Cell phones were introduced to market with no pre-market safety testing by the FDA or the FCC. Senator Shields believes that Oregon is obligated to do what it can to protect its citizens from the potential hazards of cell phone use and that legislation is needed after comparing conflicting quotes from the FCC and FDA websites and cell phone manuals."FCC and FDA WEBSITE AS OF OCT, 2010

FCC: "The Commission has stressed repeatedly that it is not a health and safety agency and would defer to the judgment of these expert agencies with respect to determining appropriate levels of safe exposure to RF energy." ....."There is no federally developed national standard for safe levels of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) energy."

FDA: "Under the law, FDA does not review the safety of radiation-emitting consumer products such as mobile phones before marketing..."

first hard neurological evidence that EMF's interfere with brain functionIn a new paper published in top journal <em>Nature Neuroscience</em>, neurobiologists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have confirmed that very weak electric fields in brain tissue significantly affect neuronal behaviour.
"This is really the first hard neurological evidence that suggests subjecting our heads to significant EMFs (especially from mobile phones) may well cause the interference (electromagnetic compatibility, EMC) problems that many people, including us, have suspected. "Conventional scientists" have long dismissed this possibility. It has potentially enormous implications for exposure guidelines. . ."

Top researchers advise precaution on mobile phone useIn a dramatic message in the Journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, two leading Interphone researchers now advise the following: Simple and low-cost measures, such as the use of text messages, hands-free kits and/or the loudspeaker mode of the phone could substantially reduce exposure to the brain from mobile phones. Therefore, until definitive scientific answers are available, the adoption of such precautions, particularly among young people, is advisable.

CNET News ArticleThe "do cell phones cause cancer?" debate rages on, and it will likely
continue until truly long-term use can be measured. In the meantime,
researchers who published a meta analysis on the risks of cell phone
radiation suggest texting over talking.
"The precautionary principle clearly applies in this case, since the
problem is possible but not certain and low-cost ameliorating actions
are easily implemented by industry," the authors conclude. "With over
3 billion people using cell phones and with children among the heaviest
users, it is time for governments to mandate precautionary measures to
protect their citizens."

The Cell Phone Disease QuagmireAn article by <strong>Dr. George Carlo</strong> in the American Trial Lawyer, a magazine for trial lawyers and a voice for justice:<strong>FACT: Cell Phones Cause DiseaseFACT: Orchestrated Illusions Have Shaped Public OpinionFACT: The Industry Has Escaped AccountabilityFACT: Legal and Legislative Actions Are Necessary</strong>"When cell phones were first proposed for consumer use in 1983, the fledging <strong>wireless communications industry convinced the Food and Drug Administration </strong><strong>(FDA) that pre-market safety testing was not necessary</strong>. The rationale: cell phones were like little microwave ovens that operated at power levels too low to cause heating. Thus, because cell phones could not be used to cook food, they were deemed safe by the FDA. This <strong>core mistake in1983</strong> became the foundation for a quarter-century public health threat that increases daily."
