"The law, which last month passed its first reading, also seeks to ban, like with tobacco, companies from marketing to children . . . "The research is split almost 50:50, on whether mobile phones pose a health hazard or not. But the balance changes if funding sources are considered, with around three quarters of the 'negative' studies - no health risks - funded by industry . . . "Most current studies are at least part funded by industry, or involve researchers with industry links . . . "The long-awaited Cardis study, published January 2, 2012 in Occupational Environmental Medicine, concludes that there is an increased risk of glioma (a type of brain tumor) in long-term mobile phone users with high RF (radio frequency) exposure and a lower risk for meningioma (a tumor of the membrane surrounding the brain). Indeed the risk for meningiomas was statistically significant in one analysis (after 7-years for group with highest exposure that included 21 cases and 51 controls). "This study, unlike other studies, attempted to estimate the amount of radiation at the site of the tumour. " . . . "Tumours were located primarily in the part of the brain receiving the maximum RF exposure. While there are many types of potential errors in this type of work, the results agree with previous studies showing an increased risk of tumours on the side of the head receiving the greatest RF exposure for heavy mobile phone users. Neurology and Neurophysiology 2011 Research Article - Hallberg and MorganIt is too early to predict future rates of brain cancer, but these preliminary findings suggest that we should prepare for about a doubled brain cancer incidence rate and possibly as high as 25 times the incidence we have today. One result of such a worldwide increase in brain cancers would be a dramatic shortage of neurosurgeons leading to increased mortality. Any statement about harmless cell phones based on only 5-10 years of use has no scientific basis due to the long latency times involved.The main conclusions from this study are: 1. Brain and CNS cancer has been increasing in many countries since roughly 1950, possibly due to the introduction of immune disturbing technologies such as electricity. 2. During recent years Norway, and some counties of Sweden show signs of an increase in brain cancer incidence rates while Denmark, Finland and the USA have not shown signs of an accelerating increase. The stability of the USA incidence rates may be due to a later start of cell phone use, combined with a slower increase in prevalence. Also because the USA only began collecting cancer data in 1975 (decades later than the Nordic countries), no information is available if there was an increased brain cancer rate similar to the Nordic countries. 3. Based on reported incidence rates during the 20th century we conclude that the latency time for brain cancer to develop from an initial damage is over 30 years. It is erroneous to make optimistic projections for the future based on cancer statistics covering time spans of only 5 to 10 years. 4. The recent trend breaks we have noticed in Norway and in parts of Sweden may be regarded as a warning. If cell phones are used in rural areas then we can expect to see drastically increasing rates of brain cancer within the next few decades in rural areas. 5. There are many actions that manufacturers can take to minimize cell phone radiation exposures. Ericsson and Nokia registered patents in 1997 [33] to limit the maximum output power from cell phones to levels below current values of 2W or 1W (900 MHz, 1800 MHz, respectively). Antennae can be designed to radiate away from the users instead of current designs which radiate omni-directionally which results in a substantial proportion of the cell phone radiation unnecessarily being absorbed by the head and body. The speaker used to place the cell phone against the ear can be replaced by a wired headset thereby removing the need to place a radiating device immediately against the head. 6. There are many actions that individuals can take to minimize cellphone radiation exposures . . .

When on a call, use a wired headset (not a wireless headset such as a Bluetooth), or use in speaker-phone mode, or send text messages. Keep the cell phone away from your body (particularly pant/trouser or shirt pockets) or use a belt holster designed to shield the body from cellphone radiation, when not in use (stand-by mode).

Avoid use in a moving car, train, bus, or in rural areas at some distance from a cell tower (AKA mast or base station) as any of these uses will increase the power of the cellphone's radiation.

Use the cellphone like an answering machine. Keep it off until you want to see who has called.

Use a corded land-line phone, whenever possible, instead of a wireless phone.

Avoid use inside of buildings, particularly with steel structures.

Do not allow your children to sleep with a cell phone beneath their pillow or at the bedside.

Do not allow your children to use a cell phone except in emergencies.

Environmental Health Trust and Other Experts Expose Major Flaws in New Danish Study Claiming No Significant Cancer Risks from Cell Phone Use."The new report misrepresents risk of brain tumors for the very same reason the original Danish study was previously criticized. Removing more than 300,000 cell phone users who were business users from the analysis (almost 30% of the original group), defining as a user anyone making one call a week for 6 months, and ignoring the fact that phone calls were more expensive and shorter years ago, reduces the group's average exposure and makes it very unlikely to find any evidence of increased risk. "Secondly, the report analyzed the rates of brain tumors that occurred between 1990-2007 in those who began using cellphones after 1987, compared to those who were non-subscribers when the study started. This also understates risk, because most of those who began as 'non-subscribers' to cell phone service (i.e. the 'controls' at the time the cohort was collected) became cell phone users later on, and accumulated almost as many years (on average per person) as the 'exposed' subscribers. Hence, the comparison to the population not contained in the subscriber sample is a comparison between two exposed groups. When Michael Kundi and colleagues from the Medical University of Vienna mathematically corrected for this concern in the earlier Danish study, they found a significantly increased risk for brain tumors. "Cell phone users who began using cell phones after 1995 and those under the age of 30 were not considered 'subscribers' in the study (as with the business users and pay-as-you go users), thus significantly diluting the results and underestimating the risk. "An accompanying editorial on the study by Anders Albom, notes several design limits of this study and repeats a concern raised about this problem in 2005, where he noted: "Not being able to include corporate users, likely to be among the earliest and heaviest users of mobile phones, also weakens the statistical power of the study." Exposure Limits: The underestimation of absorbed cell phone radiation, especially in children

Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine"The existing cell phone certification process uses a plastic model of the head called the Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin (SAM), representing the top 10% of U.S. military recruits in 1989 and greatly underestimating the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) for typical mobile phone users, especially children . . ."SAM uses a fluid having the average electrical properties of the head that cannot indicate differential absorption of specific brain tissue, nor absorption in children or smaller adults. The SAR for a 10-year old is up to 153% higher than the SAR for the SAM model. When electrical properties are considered, a child's head's absorption can be over two times greater, and absorption of the skull's bone marrow can be ten times greater than adults. Therefore, a new certification process is needed that incorporates different modes of use, head sizes, and tissue properties. Anatomically based models should be employed in revising safety standards for these ubiquitous modern devices and standards should be set by accountable, independent groups . . . "We have shown that children and small adults absorb significantly more cell phone radiation than SAM estimates. Accordingly, contemporary cell phone standards for all of the world's more than five billion cell phones do not protect the young or the 97% of the population with heads smaller than SAM. As a respected and informed journalist, you should be educating your readers on this issue. In May of this year, this type of radiation emitted by cellphones and other wireless devices was declared a possible class 2B carcinogen. The press-release claimed that the results were "reassuring" whereas the study itself indicated an increased risk. Apart from playing down the results, there is evidence that the scientists also manipulated the research in order to underestimate the risks, especially of cordless phones . . . "Cefalo might have been designed to play down risks, but instead of challenging the findings of the international Interphone group and the Swedish Hardell group, it reconfirms them. These studies made IARC, the cancer research agency of the World Health Organisation, classify mobile phone radiation as "possibly carcinogenic" in May 2011. "There is now more than enough evidence for an application of the precautionary principle according to the International EMF Alliance, a public interest NGO representing some 60 grassroots organisations advocating for a regulation and a reduction of electro-pollution. - The irrational "zero-risk" interpretation of the Cefalo scientists creates doubts and could postpone preventive measures and cause unnecessary suffering. Mobile phone use has increased massively among children and teenagers the last decade, and even a small increase of brain tumour risks is of great concern, says Alex Swinkels, IEMFA board member . . ."

Results: Almost all tables indicate an increased risk. The risk was 36% higher for children and adolescents who

used mobile phones regularly. (OR 1,36, CI 0,92-2,02). The risk was amplified by a longer latency time and was

more than twice as high (+115%) for children for whom the longest time had elapsed since they received their first

mobile phone subscription. (OR 2,15, CI 1,07-4,29).

Statistical significance: The odds ratio (OR) measures the odds of an event occurring in a group compared to a

control group. Positive results are considered to be statistically significant when the entire confidence interval (CI)

is above 1. The doubled risk mentioned above is thus significant.

"Shields, a Democrat who represents parts of Portland, introduced the legislation along with five other Democratic and Republican state lawmakers, amid growing concern that long-term exposure to cellphones could lead to health problems, including cancer, particularly among youth and children. San Francisco has adopted the nation's first ordinance requiring labeling of radiation data at retail stores -- a rule the wireless industry has fought with a lawsuit against the city . . . "The scientific consensus from these impartial health organizations is that there are no negative health effects from consumer use of wireless devices," said John Walls, CTIA's vice president of communications.
