Wireless devices and technologies, and the infrastructure required to support them, are endangering not only human biology, but all natural processes in our environment as well. Wildlife, and the environmental systems they depend on to survive. We can all take immediate steps to lessen the damage we are causing from using wireless technologies.

Vancouver family conclude that meter must be removed - Letter written April 12, 2012Letter to the Honourable Michael de Jong:" . . . When I voiced my concern, B.C. Hydro said I had "no choice in the matter" and that if I refused to have one installed that they would cut off my power."" . . . Shortly after the installation, which was on the outside of my house nearest to my den, my 12 year old dog Trapper started to exhibit distress and odd signs of behavior which we had never experienced before.
The den was where he slept since he was a 3 month old puppy and where he went to seek refuge if he was ever scared. After December 14th, he avoids that room at all costs and has spent many sleepless nights walking and pacing from room to room, trying to sleep and lifting up his head in distress countless times, and the only place he can calm down is outside on our deck, outside of the house . . . "When we take him to friends' homes (who don't have smart meters) to get some moments of solace, he is like our old dog, relaxed, sleeping peacefully . . . no whining, crying, pacing etc. . . and then as soon as we bring him back home, it all starts in again. . .

Critical opportunity for creating a positive precedent in EMF Cases"At issue are the effects of radio-frequency and microwave emissions from the transmission resulting from the operation of 120kV transmission line located southeast of St-Hyacinthe, Quebec having a particular configuration and function. Mortality rates in the metal-clad pig barn 250 meters from the transmission line have increased from less than 1% before the line's installation in 2004 to 5-10%. "According to EMF expert Michrowski, microwave and radio frequency emissions from the line will continue to increase, and eventually, the barn and the family home/office are likely to become unusable. Until the line became operational in 2004, White Canada Geese used to land and feed by the thousands each fall in front of the home. Dr. Michrowski believes that the reason they no longer do so is because the microwave emissions from line induce large nerve, sciatica pain. Microwave emissions are frequently employed as a technology to ward off birds from airport runways . . .

space weather and EMP weapons of the futureMay 1, 2012
"The UK government has outlined what it is doing to prepare for major solar storms.

"Yesterday, the government published a response to the Defence Committee's report on the developing threat of Electro-Magnetic Pulses (EMP). EMP can appear in the event of extreme Space Weather, as well as a result of a nuclear explosion or a specifically-developed, non-nuclear weapon.
"The report stated that EMP poses "known and significant" risks to the UK infrastructure, including National Grid and satellite networks . . .
<strong>Space Pulse
</strong>"The report suggested the UK needs to be prepared in case of another "Carrington event". In 1859, the most powerful Solar Storm in recorded history resulted in widespread failure of telegraph systems and magnetic activity on earth was so high that Aurorae were seen over the Caribbean. The Carrington event has been widely seen as the "worst case scenario" of a Solar Storm.

"Severe space weather would be expected to have moderate to significant effects upon a range of technologies and infrastructure, including communications systems, electronic circuits and power grids, the report acknowledged. Even if another Carrington event does not happen, smaller solar storms will inevitably take place, which could have serious consequences.

"In the energy sector, the Government is working closely with industry through the Energy Emergencies Executive Committee (E3C) to establish the potential impact of severe space weather on the power grid . . .

Environmental Diseases "Bernardino Ramazzini" - Bologna, Italy

"Albert Szent-Gyorgyi stated that scientists cannot formally distinguish between animate and inanimate things possibly because biological science concentrated on studying substances typical for living things and neglected two matrices without which they cannot perform anything: water and electromagnetic fields. As a matter of fact water represents 70% of the total mass and 99%of the molecules in average living organisms, so that it is conceivable that it should play an important role in the dynamics of the alive. Since the single water molecule is too simple, as compared to the structure of the other biomolecules, it is unreasonable to think that it could play a role as a single independent object. The only possibility is that such a role could be played by the supramolecular organization of a large number of water molecules. "Collective properties of water are thus the main topics to be investigated in a biological context. Since the long range interaction among molecules cannot be but electromagnetic, the long range organization of water molecules requires the essential intervention of the electromagnetic field . . .

Fight over BWCA cell tower in appeals court a precedent-setting case - St. Paul, Minnesota USA"A court battle continues over a proposed 450-foot cell phone tower near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

"AT&T wants to build the tower on private land between Ely and the western border of the BWCA. Several environmental groups sued to stop the project, saying it would intrude on the dark skies and scenic vistas of the area.

"Last summer a judge ruled in their favor. AT&T appealed, and today an appeals court panel heard arguments in the case, weighing the basic question: Does Minnesota law protect scenic vistas on public land even if the intruding structure is on nearby private land?
"Paul Danicic, executive director of the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness says it does.

"Danicic's group and others sued AT&T under the Minnesota Environmental Rights Act. It says citizens have a right and a responsibility to help protect the natural resources of the state -- including scenic and esthetic resources when they're on land owned by the government . . .

Excellent overview of what bees (and humans) are facing with microwaves"Will the Communications Industry be the Final Straw for Our Planet's Ecosystems?""Within my presentation to the beekeepers' association at Glastonbury in 2008, I referenced 14 articles explaining why the bees are particularly susceptible to microwave irradiation. I stressed that bees could be exposed to magnetic fields roughly 640 times more powerful than they normally encounter with the Earth's field. "The consequences of this can be two-fold: i) the ferromagnetic compounds within their heads, thorax and abdomen can produce hysteresis loops affecting proprioception (spatial awareness); and ii) the very size of the bee's antennas, brain and body render it susceptible to resonance (unwanted vibrations). (9) Put simply, I would argue that the bee is disorientated with a failing immune system and like AIDS in humans will become victim of any infection(s) or infestation(s) which came along . . ."

by organisms ranging from bacteria through higher vertebrates.
Sensory systems that aid such behavior have provided key
selective advantages to these groups over the past 4 billion
years, and are highly evolved; magnetoreception is no
exception. Across many species and groups of organisms,
compelling evidence exists that the physical basis of this
response is tiny crystals of single-domain magnetite (Fe3O4). It
is the opinion of the authors that all magnetic field sensitivity in
living organisms, including elasmobranch fishes, is the result of
a highly evolved, finely-tuned sensory system based on singledomain,
ferromagnetic crystals . . .

Education, Entitlement, E-waste and Environment: We are killing this planet, Earth (D12 Voice" . . . Some years ago, education in our schools became a follower of trends in society, economy, media (imitation of television shows about fashion, singing, dancing, etc.) and politics. Despite all the posters and symbolic demonstrations--such as for Earth Day/Week-- consumer mentality thoughtlessly advocates continued pollution of the environment under the arrogant tenet that humans have the right to use the planet's resources as they see fit. This tenet has been adopted by many institutions and organizations, as well in the educational field.

"As life and learning are inseparable, I believe that education should lay the foundation in any society and culture. Education should lead the way of life and instill higher levels of thinking and higher valuation of nature and our only living space: the planet Earth.

"Our economy has shifted from a focus on manufacturing industries to a focus on service industries. This transformation cost society many job losses and made a huge impact because service industries rely more heavily on retailing. As a result, this service economy relies more directly on end-user consumers. Therefore, the best way to guarantee that the service industries will continue growing and the corporations will make profit is to find ways of assuring that the end-user population is well-trained to become dependent consumers with limited consciousness of the result of their purchases.

"In the name of education, we are killing this planet, we are contributing to global warming, we are officially producing e-waste and we are proud of it (the more we rely on technology the higher our score as a teacher/school)! Worst of all, we are raising a generation of dependent consumers--their sense of entitlement and their need for convenience, instant gratification and feeling good in the moment is dangerously destructive to their own environment and the future of the only home we have: Earth.

Canadian government is 'muzzling its scientists'

The issue applies to Environment Canada, Health Canada and beyond"You have a government that is micromanaging the message, obsessively. It seems to vet everything that goes out to the media" Margaret Muro, Canadian Science Journalist ". . . It's so hard to get hold of scientists that a lot of my colleagues have given up," she explained.
"Ms Munro cited another example of research published in another leading scientific journal, Nature, that was published last October.
"An international team including several scientists from the government agency, Environment Canada, set out details of a hole that appeared in the ozone layer above the Arctic.

"Ms Munro said she had called one of the scientists involved who she had dealt with several times in the past. He agreed to speak to her, but said that he had been told that her request had to be put to government media relations officials in Ottawa.
"So I phoned up Ottawa and they just said no you can't talk to the guy. A couple of weeks later, he was available but by then the story had been done. So they take them out of the news cycle," she said. "Ms Munro also claims that journalists were denied access to scientists working for the government agency Health Canada last year, when there was concern about radiation levels reaching the country's western coast from Japan following the explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Ultimately, journalists obtained the information they sought from European agencies.

"The Postmedia News journalist obtained documents relating to interview requests using Canada's equivalent of the Freedom of Information Act. She said the documents show interview requests move up what she describes as an "increasingly thick layer of media managers, media strategists, deputy ministers, then go up to the Privy Council Office, which decides 'yes' or 'no'" . . .

"The government has never explained what the process is. They just imposed these changes and they expected us to sit back and take it," she explained.

"Professor Andrew Weaver believes that the media protocol is being used by the Canadian government to "instruct scientists to deliver a certain message, thereby taking the heat out of controversial topics".

He added: "You can't have an informed discussion if the science isn't allowed to be communicated. Public relations message number one is that you have to set the conversation. You don't want to have a conversation on someone else's terms. And this is now being applied to science on discussions about oil sands, climate and salmon."

Lawsuit filed by EMF Safety Network"On January 11, the EMF Safety Network filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court against the City of Sebastopol, Verizon, and Crown Castle alleging the City's decision to approve a 4G cell tower expansion was in violation of a California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). According to the Sebastopol attorney, the city has a "hold harmless" clause in their contract with Verizon which requires Verizon to pay for all litigation costs related to the cell tower.

"Sebastopol is located adjacent to an internationally recognized wetlands preserve, the Laguna De Santa Rosa. The City filed a CEQA exemption for the project stating there would be "negligible or no expansion of use", calling it a "minor alteration." EMF Safety Network lawyer Rose Zoia argued their exemption claims were false. The addition of 3 and 4 G panels to the cell tower will add significant radio frequency (RF) exposure to the downtown area and extend nine miles into the Laguna.

"Sebastopol's Telecommunications Ordinance states, " No telecommunications facility shall be sited such that its presence threatens the health and safety of migratory birds." . . .

Romanian Study"Since atmosphere "microwave window" allows penetration of cosmicradiation with frequencies ranging within GHz domain, there is always amicrowave component within the environment radiation background. In the modern world, with the use of sophisticated microwave emitting devices for communications in the air, surveillance systems, industry, diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in medicine - the importance of electromagnetic pollution need not be over emphasized.
"There is a rich literature describing the biological influence of low frequency electromagnetic fields upon vegetal organisms. But the responses elicited invarious plant species appear to depend in a complex way on both the physical parameters of the irradiation source (frequency, power density, pulses or continuous waves, duration of exposure etc.) and the condition of the biological material magnetic (vegetation stage, pretreatment, environment etc.); nevertheless different biological parameters may lead to the revealing of different aspects of the interaction between the electromagnetic waves and the irradiated material. Some examples are illustrating the above statement . . .

Aspen Study 2010 - Colorado USA<em>If Wi-Fi harms trees, what about children?</em>"Aspen decline has been reported in North America over the past half century and rapid mortality of aspen clones has been observed in Colorado since 2004 and has become a major concern for environmentalists, scientists, and foresters.

"In one experiment, published February 2010 in The International Journal of Forestry Research, scientists constructed mock-shielded cages and faraday-shielded cages in the forest just outside of Lyons, Colorado. The mock cage shielded aspen seedlings only from direct light - while the faraday cage shielded seedlings from all forms of radio frequency radiation originating from the town of Lyons in the frequency range of 1 MHz to 3 GHz. This includes radio broadcast signals as well as cell phone and WiFi signals.

"The researchers discovered that the tree seedlings growing inside the radio frequency-shielded cages were much larger and healthier than those in both the mock-shielded cages and in the unshielded controls. The authors report that the background levels of radio frequency radiation may be adversely affecting leaf and shoot growth and inhibiting fall production of anthocyanins (these are the pigments associated with leaf senescence in trembling aspen seedlings). These results suggest that exposure to the RF radiation generated by our wireless technology may be an underlying factor in the recent rapid decline of aspen populations . . .

Andrew Goldsworthy 2011, Imperial College, London England"Trees are now dying mysteriously from a variety of diseases in urban areas all over Europe and are also showing abnormal photoperiodic responses. In addition, many have cancer-like growths under the bark (phloem nodules) and the bark may also split so that the underlying tissues become infected. All of these can be explained as being a result of weak radio-frequency radiation from mobile phones, their base stations, WiFi and similar sources of weak non-ionising radiation. But first let us look at how living organisms use electric currents that they generate themselves and which perform vital functions in their normal day-to-day metabolism and growth. We will then go on to see how weak electromagnetic fields can disrupt these and bring about many unwanted biological effects...

effects, mechanism, and thresholds"The hearing of microwave pulses is a unique exception to the airborne or bone-conducted sound energy normally encountered in human auditory perception. The hearing apparatus commonly responds to airborne or bone-conducted acoustic or sound pressure waves in the audible frequency range. But the hearing of microwave pulses involves electromagnetic waves whose frequency ranges from hundreds of MHz to tens of GHz. Since electromagnetic waves (e.g., light) are seen but not heard, the report of auditory perception of microwave pulses was at once astonishing and intriguing. Moreover, it stood in sharp contrast to the responses associated with continuous-wave microwave radiation. Experimental and theoretical studies have shown that the microwave auditory phenomenon does not arise from an interaction of microwave pulses directly with the auditory nerves or neurons along the auditory neurophysiological pathways of the central nervous system. Instead, the microwave pulse, upon absorption by soft tissues in the head, launches a thermoelastic wave of acoustic pressure that travels by bone conduction to the inner ear. There, it activates the cochlear receptors via the same process involved for normal hearing. Aside from tissue heating, microwave auditory effect is the most widely accepted biological effect of microwave radiation with a known mechanism of interaction: the thermoelastic theory. The phenomenon, mechanism, power requirement, pressure amplitude, and auditory thresholds of microwave hearing are discussed in this paper. A specific emphasis is placed on human exposures to wireless communication fields and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) coils.

Study examining the biological effects of EMF and cell towers on Wildlife<strong>STUDY</strong> Cell Tower - EMF Effects on WildlifeA review on the <strong>impact of radiofrequency radiation</strong> from wireless telecommunications on wildlife is presented. Electromagnetic radiation is a form of environmental pollution which may hurt wildlife. Phone masts located in their living areas are irradiating continuously some species that could suffer long-term effects, like reduction of their natural defenses, deterioration of their health, problems in reproduction andreduction of their useful territory through habitat deterioration. Electromagnetic radiation can exert an aversive behavioral response in rats, bats and birds such as sparrows. Therefore microwave and radiofrequency pollution constitutes a potential cause for the decline of animalpopulations and deterioration of health of plants living near phone masts.

Christopher Ketcham: Earth Island Journal - Winter 2012(Related Christopher Ketcham Article: <a href="http://citizensforsafetechnology.org/Warning-Your-Cell-Phone-May-Be-Hazardous-to-Your-Health,22,24" title="ketcham GQ">Warning: Your Cell Phone May be Hazardous to Your Health</a>, February, 2010)"Consider this story: It's January 1990, during the pioneer build-out of mobile phone service. A cell tower goes up 800 feet from the house of Alison Rall, in Mansfield, Ohio, where she and her husband run a 160-acre dairy farm. The first thing the Rall family notices is that the ducks on their land lay eggs that don't hatch. That spring there are no ducklings.

"By the fall of 1990, the cattle herd that pastures near the tower is sick. The animals are thin, their ribs are showing, their coats growing rough, and their behavior is weird - they're agitated, nervous. Soon the cows are miscarrying, and so are the goats. Many of the animals that gestate are born deformed. There are goats with webbed necks, goats with front legs shorter than their rear legs. One calf in the womb has a tumor the size of a basketball, another carries a tumor three feet in diameter, big enough that he won't pass through the birth canal. Rall and the local veterinarian finally cut open the mother to get the creature out alive. The vet records the nightmare in her log: "I've never seen anything like this in my entire practice... All of [this] I feel was a result of the cellular tower."

"Within six months, Rall's three young children begin suffering bizarre skin rashes, raised red "hot spots." The kids are hit with waves of hyperactivity; the youngest child sometimes spins in circles, whirling madly. The girls lose hair. Rall is soon pregnant with a fourth child, but she can't gain weight. Her son is born with birth defects - brittle bones, neurological problems - that fit no specific syndrome. Her other children, conceived prior to the arrival of the tower, had been born healthy.

"Desperate to understand what is happening to her family and her farm, Rall contacts the Environmental Protection Agency. She ends up talking to an EPA scientist named Carl Blackman, an expert on the biological effects of radiation from electromagnetic fields (EMFs) - the kind of radiofrequency EMFs (RF-EMFs) by which all wireless technology operates, including not just cell towers and cell phones but wi-fi hubs and wi-fi-capable computers, "smart" utility meters, and even cordless home phones. "With my government cap on, I'm supposed to tell you you're perfectly safe," Blackman tells her. "With my civilian cap on, I have to tell you to consider leaving."

"Blackman's warning casts a pall on the family. When Rall contacts the cell phone company operating the tower, they tell her there is "no possibility whatsoever" that the tower is the source of her ills. "You're probably in the safest place in America," the company representative tells her.
"The Ralls abandoned the farm on Christmas Day of 1992 and never re-sold it, unwilling to subject others to the horrors they had experienced. Within weeks of fleeing to land they owned in Michigan, the children recovered their health, and so did the herd.

"We are now exposed to electromagnetic radio frequencies 24 hours a day. Welcome to the largest human experiment ever.
"Not a single one of the half-dozen scientists I spoke to could explain what had happened on the Rall farm . . .

Indian Government studying impact of phone towers on birds, bees"New Delhi, Nov 28 (IBNS): The Indian Environment Ministry is examining a report by an expert committee that has studied the possible impacts of cell phone towers on wildlife including birds and bees.
In a written reply to a question posed by lawmakers, Natarajan said that the Ministry had formed the expert committee on Aug 30 under the chairmanship of Dr Asad Rahmani, Director, Bombay Natural History Society. "Media reports have said that the environment and forests' ministry study has blamed electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from communication towers for the declining numbers of sparrows and bees. "The study titled 'A possible impact of communication tower on wildlife birds and bees' said the radiation decreases egg production in the bees. "It also added that in the case of honey bees, the group observed that high radiation resulted in an unusual phenomenon known as 'colony collapse disorder' which is characterized by sudden disappearance of a hive's inhabitants, leaving only queens, eggs and a few immature workers behind. "The vanished bees were never found. Also, the navigational skills of the bees were affected by high-tension lines . . ."
"India is one of the fastest growing mobile telephony industries in the world. It is
estimated that by 2013, 1 billion plus people will be having cell phone connection in India. To
support this growth of cell phone subscriber in the country, there has also been a tremendous
growth of infrastructure in the form of mobile phone towers. Today, in absence of any policy on
infrastructure development and location of cell phone towers, large numbers of mobile phone
towers are being installed in a haphazard manner across urban and rural areas including other
sparsely populated areas in India . . ."

MPR News, Minnesota U.S. - January, 2011"A divided Minnesota Supreme Court ruled today that two Wabasha County farmers can seek money from an electric utility, whose stray voltage, they say, has caused their cows to give out less milk . . . The stray voltage is also believed to have killed 80 dairy cows.

"In upholding a lower court's ruling, the Supreme Court said Greg and Harlan Siewert of Zumbro Falls are free to seek damages from Northern States Power Company, the parent of Xcel Energy. When the two moved to their new farm in 1989, they noticed the milk production decreased from their 150-200 cows. Experts said it was because electrical current returned to the ground through the cows.

"It's a slow, painful tortuous death, is what it is for them," Greg Siewert told the Star Tribune in 2008. "It's like watching someone die of AIDS."

"The court rejected the utility's claim that any damages would impact electricity rates in violation of state law, especially if it had to redesign its electrical distribution system . . .

"Dairy farmers could improve milk production and quality by keeping a close check on stray electricity voltage in their milking parlours and collecting yards . . . "And according to New Zealand service technician, Tim McDonald, mistakes as simple as using tape to connect an electric fence to collecting yard steel can generate enough voltage to upset cows when they are about to be milked.<ul><li>Symptoms of stray voltage: </li><li>Excessive or unusual nervousness and excessive movement</li><li>Reluctance to enter, or eagerness, to leave the milking parlour</li><li>Increased frequency of defecation and/or urination in the milking parlour</li><li>Reluctance to consume water</li><li>Poor milk let-down</li><li>Increased milking time</li><li>Lowered milk production</li><li>Increased somatic cell counts and incidence of clinical mastitis</li></ul>

Seven Billion People Need Bees

Reese Halter - Conservation Biologist and Broadcaster"This first week of November (2011) our population surpassed seven billion humans. And in the last week of October (2011) scientists from the University of California at Berkeley irrefutably proved that over one billion temperature sensors registered warming between 1-2 degrees Celsius, in some cases more than three times greater than the IPCCs average of 0.64 degrees Celsius. Humans are forcing the climate by burning carbon-based fuels releasing over 82 million metric tons of greenhouse gases, daily, on our planet.

"All life forms are in jeopardy. Our food chain is perilously close to collapsing; yet the lawmakers in Washington regularly ignore this message. My biology and environmental students at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks and I are miffed at why this issue is not front and center in DC.

"Prices at the grocery store have been rising dramatically since February 2011 and will continue to do so with no foreseeable end in sight. The climate has changed that much -- it's disrupting our way of life and costing governments around the world billions of dollars in infrastructure damage . . ."Surprisingly, bees and humans share a number of similarities. For example, we both require restful and rejuvenating sleep. Sleep deprived bees, just like humans, experience communication problems like finding food and performing an accurate waggle dance to reveal locations of nectar, pollen, water and tree resin. Stressed bees like humans become anxious, depressed and pessimistic; they display emotion-like qualities. Moreover, bees that exhibit a high defensive behavior or optimism are likely to survive a winter rather than perish . . .

"The amount of electromagnetic radiation emitted from your cellular phone is enough for you to strongly consider using the "hands-free" mode to obviate harmful brain radiation. Researchers from Switzerland discovered that the amount of radiation given off by just one mobile phone has a noticeably negative effect on bee behavior, causing them to immediately become anxious. People would be wise to take note at what the bees are showing us about cellular phone radiation levels.

"At the end of each day I take a tablespoon of local beekeepers' honey and marvel that it took 12 bees laboring their entire foraging lives of three weeks, combined flying time of about 6,000 miles, to produce 21 grams or a tablespoon of delicious and nutritious honey."

beekeeper wants people to know, and will pursue this with B.C. HydroPlease read this. I am not the only one, and I won't be the last. "I knew about colony collapse disorder and other bee problems but since I live in a wooded area free of pesticides and GMO close by, on a river facing a mountain outside cell phone range, I thought our bees would be safe.
"They thrived for over a year but have now disappeared. Only a few are left inside, frozen yet there is plenty of honey and capped brood - exactly how colony collapse is described. "Bees do not voluntarily leave a hive where there is capped brood. What happens is that bees leave the hive to go forage or get water, and get lost due to their navigation system being disrupted by electromagnetic fields. So they wander aimlessly until they die of exhaustion. The result is that we find empty bee hives.

"The few dead bees inside, dead of cold because of too few bees to keep the hive from freezing, are perfectly shaped, showing they were healthy, without parasites. I never thought I would see this here. "Three weeks ago they were fine. So what happened? "I have now found out Hydro installed a smart meter on my property without my knowledge and I think it was early fall. I am writing Hydro to get it removed and trying to find out if I can have any legal recourse. "I am very sad for my bees but most of all depressed to think we are creating a world in which even beneficial beings such as bees cannot survive.
"Since there are other animals on this property I am determined to try and get everyone in the area to refuse smart meters.

"Please let people know about this."

Concerning more rapid growth of wireless infrastructure in Vancouver<em>Sent by Una St. Clair calling for public consultation and input regarding Shaw's current plan to put Carrier Grade Wi-Fi routers in a wireless mesh throughout Vancouver's public spaces. She is asking Vancouver Council to move to protect public spaces so that all people, and the natural environment, can spend time in Vancouver without being assaulted by microwave radiofrequency radiation.

</em>"We are being inundated by e-mails and calls from Vancouver residents who are strongly opposed to the Shaw plan to put Carrier Grade Wi-Fi routers in a continuous and comprehensive overlapping wireless mesh throughout Vancouver's public places - from Stanley Park to downtown to the beaches.
"In discussion with a Shaw engineer this morning, I was told they have no knowledge that microwave radiofrequency electromagnetic fields are a W.H.0. Class 2B, possible human carcinogen, nor that Health Canada has issued an advisory to alert parents that reduction of wireless exposure to cellular devices is warranted at this time. You will find Parliamentary Council of Europe resolution attached - this document explains clearly the need to reduce exposure, not increase it.
"I have been told by Shaw that Vancouver council and local government officials are making agreements to have these Wi-Fi routers installed on street poles, light fixtures, buildings (inside and out), literally everywhere. There is no arrangement in place to post signs on the locations of these devices, so there is no warning for people who have strong personal and health reasons and wish to avoid . . ."

radiation from mobile towers affects the reproductive and nervous system of sparrows and bees<em>The study<a href="http://www.firstpost.com/fwire/environ-panel-seeks-minimising-radiation-from-mobile-towers-106340.html" title="sparrow study"> Rahmani Study</a></em> <em>says that radiation from mobile towers affects the reproductive and nervous system of sparrows and bees. The Electro Magnetic Radiation (EMR) from mobile towers acts as an irritant, making them shy away from mating. The babies are often born with deformities due to the EMR interfering with their biological system.</em>"The issue of 'disappearing birds and bees' was raised in the Lok Sabha in August last year, following which the expert committee was asked to study the 'possible impacts of mobile towers on wildlife including birds and bees'.

"Although, sparrows are tough birds, in Mumbai they have been subjected to an unholy combination of challenges that has broken their hardy backs.

"Where have all the sparrows gone?

"Sparrows are now making their winged presence felt in the city's list of endangered species. "The disappearance of the highly adaptable sparrow is the first warning signal for humans," says Rahmani, the director of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS). Sparrows being very sensitive to the environment are one of the most preferred indicators of the urban ecosystem. A declining population of the bird is a clear indicator that something is wrong with the water you drink and the air you breathe . . ."

Bees and microwave radiation - Barrie Trower

"Will the Communications Industry be the final straw for Our Planet's Ecosystems?" Glastonbury Symposium Presentation"During a recent visit to Africa, a gentleman took me to a field full of plants and said "What do you hear Barrie?" I replied: "Nothing." He said: "Normally you and I would not be able to hear each other now, there would be so many bees buzzing, however, since that mobile phone transmitter went up, we haven't seen a single bee." I received other similar reports concerning bees, birds, even ants during my stay in Africa. It was explained to me that the ants are very important for their symbiotic relationship with plants. The plants produce a sweet substance to feed the ants and in return the ants prevent insects landing on and eating the plant's leaves. Hence, ants guarantee plant crop safety and harvest.

"It appeared that the common denominator in all cases was the proximity of mobile phone transmitters transmitting low-level continuous microwaves with added modulations (pulses) causing cellular distress to species within range. Residents who complained were told that such installations were within 'International Safety Guidelines'; other residents were either totally ignored, mocked or ridiculed.

"Yet proof of such effects from low-level microwave irradiation has been known to Government(s) and published since 1932. (1) By 1971 the US Naval Medical Research institute referenced 2300 research articles listing in excess of 120 illnesses from low-level microwaves. (2) This was reinforced by confirmation from the US Defence Intelligence Agency Documents from 1972-76. (3)

"So what does all this have to do with bees, birds and ants? Well, quite a lot really . . ."

applications, and the anthropogenic RF background continues to increase in intensity and complexity. "This study suggests that
the RF background may have strong adverse effects on growth rate and fall anthocyanin production in aspen, and may be an
underlying factor in aspen decline."

electromagnetic radiation impact on birds, bees and other species"Mobile phone towers could have an adverse long-term impact on birds, bees and other species. An expert panel headed by Asad Rahmani, Director of Bombay Natural History Museum, has suggested steps to minimise the impact. Among them are curbing installation of mobile phone towers in the vicinity of wildlife protected areas, bird sanctuaries, Ramsar sites, turtle breeding areas, bee colonies and zoos, apart from constructing towers on a platform which can be relocated, writes Kalyan Ray."As cell phone networks grow exponentially connecting every corner of the country, researchers and environmentalists are jittery about the impact of electromagnetic radiation on birds, bees and other animals.

"While there is no conclusive scientific evidence on how it works, a large volume of scientific literature shows that the electromagnetic field does have an adverse long-term impact on the biological and behavioural systems, though the causal mechanism remains unknown . . ."

Responsible for pollinating over 110 different crop types throughout the world and accounting for a quarter-trillion dollars' worth of commerce, the incredible efforts of the honeybees are vital to humanity in terms of the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the medicines we use. And yet, all around the globe, billions of honeybees are dying from colony collapse disorder, the effects of global warming, introduced mites, bacteria, fungi, diseases and modern insecticides. Our civilization as we know it depends on the health and well-being of all 20,000 known species of bees, and each of us is required to lend a helping hand to ensure that the bees survive.

Dr. Reese Halter<img src="../images/content/insatiable_bark_beetle.jpg" align="left" alt="">In our ever-warming world, trillions of indigenous bark beetles are killing billions of mature conifers throughout the forests of western North America and around the world, as they embark on their largest and most destructive feeding frenzy in modern times. In areas where cold temperatures traditionally prevented these insects from thriving, our once-healthy but now water-starved trees are becoming more and more vulnerable to the voracious appetites of these destructive pests. With aspects of both our environment and the economy at stake, Dr. Reese Halter''s second RMB Manifesto provides information on the various types of beetles negatively impacting trees, descriptions of the ecosystems they currently inhabit, and an accessible look at the future humanity may face if we do not find ways to control greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, which are contributing factors to the ongoing spread of bark beetles.

The Times of IndiaKOCHI: They don't use cell phones; yet they may be its worst victims. Next time you read a report on birds falling prey to radiation and consequently getting sick, you might as well guess that a cell phone tower could have caused it. It is not just humans but birds and bees too are beginning to feel the impact of 'electro-smog', the pollution from the <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/electromagnetic-fields" style="color: #336797; text-decoration: none; font-size: 15px; font-family: georgia; line-height: 20px; ">electromagnetic fields</a> (EMF). Unlike most other known pollutants, <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/electromagnetic-radiation" style="color: #336797; text-decoration: none; font-size: 15px; font-family: georgia; line-height: 20px; ">electromagnetic radiation</a> (EMR) is not readily perceivable to human sense organs and hence not easily detectable. "There is no doubt that birds move out of their favourite areas when they sense undue pressure or get wrong signals from nature. It would be better if towers are not set up in places where birds congregate," V S Vijayan, ornithologist and former chairman of <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Kerala-State-Biodiversity-Board" style="color: #336797; text-decoration: none; font-size: 15px; font-family: georgia; line-height: 20px; ">Kerala State Biodiversity Board</a>, said.
New Delhi, IndiaNEW DELHI: Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from mobile towers was interfering with the biological systems of birds, a study released by the environment ministry said and called for a law for the protection of flora and fauna.

"The review of existing literature shows that the EMRs are interfering with the biological systems in more ways than one and there had already been some warning bells sounded in the case on bees and birds, which probably heralds the seriousness of this issue and indicates the vulnerability of other species as well," the study found. "The ministry in September 2010 had constituted a 10-member committee under Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) director Asad Rahmani to study the impact of mobile phone towers on birds and bees and formulating guidelines for their installations. "The expert group reviewed 919 studies done in India and abroad on the ill effects of mobile towers in animal, birds and insects. Of the 919 studies, the team found that 593 showed the negative impact of mobile towers on birds, bees, human, wildlife and plants . . ."

Global System for Mobile Communication - effects on the reproductive biology of insects (Drosophila Melanogaster)This work was supported by the Special Account for Research Grants of the University of Athens."Pulsed radio frequency, (RF), electromagnetic radiation from common GSM
mobile phones, (Global System for Mobile Telecommunications) with a carrier
frequency at 900 MHz, ''modulated'' by human voice, (speaking emission)
decreases the reproductive capacity of the insect Drosophila melanogaster by
50%-60%, whereas the corresponding ''nonmodulated'' field (nonspeaking
emission) decreases the reproductive capacity by 15%-20%. The insects were
exposed to the near field of the mobile phone antenna for 6 min per day during
the first 2-5 days of their adult lives. The GSM field is found to affect both
females and males. Our results suggest that this field-radiation decreases the rate
of cellular processes during gonad development in insects . . . "The statistical analysis clearly shows that the exposed Drosophila groups differ
in offspring production (up to 60% decrease), compared to the control groups, due
to the effect of the GSM field . . ."

Studying Possible Non-Thermal Influences on Honey Bees - An Approach within the Framework of Educational Informatics"In recent years the public discussion has been focused increasingly on possible unhealthy effects
of high-frequency electromagnetic fields (particularly of mobile-phones) on human beings.
Whereas thermal effects of this radiation could be explained very well, non-thermal effects could
hardly be clarified. In our last works, we pointed out that - from view of Educational Informatics
- honey bees are suitable bioindicators to serve as a model of a living being to study learning
processes especially in this aspect.
"In this paper, we describe a first pilot study, which explores the non-thermal influence of high-frequency electromagnetic fields. Therefore we observe the behaviour of honey bees (apis mellifera carnica) by exposing them to the radiation of DECT-phones. In this study four respectively
eight bee-colonies were used as experimental group and were irradiated, whereas the same numbers of comparable bee-colonies was field-free. The observed parameters were the building behaviour of the bees within the beehive, its weight and especially the bees' returning behaviour . . ."

The Kindred Spirits Project"Apparently there is a fair amount of controversy regarding the introduction of smart meters into residential homes throughout the world. In addition to their questionable economic value and privacy issues, there actually seem to be potentially significant health effects on people and now seemingly on animals.<a href="http://sa.patch.com/blog_posts/smart-meter-nightmare-3-east-county-woman-and-pet-sick-begging-for-help#c" title="dogs and sm">This article</a> presents the first documentation of the health hazards of smart meters to dogs. The interesting point is that the dog has no concept that a smart meter was installed or that anything changed, so that any behavioral changes such as the ones described cannot be written off as a negative placebo effect. This is the first dog in a clinical collection of individual cases for a study on the health effects of smart meters on our animal companions. If skeptics flippantly criticize people who claim to be electrosensitive as "it is all in their head", seeing animals that are reacting to smart meters and are sensitive to radio frequency and electromagnetic radiation removes the placebo effect. With this particular anecdote, there appears to be a clear case of cause and effect . . ."

Hundreds gather on Parliament Hill: Civil Disobedience September 26, 2011<em>Others who've stood up . . . "They fear ordinary people taking this kind of action."</em>(Ottawa) - Hundreds of people from across North America are gathered this morning on Parliament Hill for a rally followed by a mass civil disobedience sit-in. Participants are responding to a call to action for a large peaceful protest where many will risk arrest to tell the Harper government they don't support his reckless agenda and urge him to turn away from the tar sands and build a green energy future that promotes climate justice, respects Indigenous rights and prioritizes the health of our environment and communities.

"It is morally justifiable to risk arrest if you see and witness a crime occurring or about to occur. We are saying the tar sands industry is unlawful. We need to stop it before the damage is done. It's worth getting arrested to send that warning out to the rest of Canada," said Louisette Lante, a housewife from Waterloo.

"The action began at 10 a.m. with a solidarity rally in front of the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill featuring a number of speeches from prominent individuals from environmental organizations and Indigenous communities directly impacted by the tar sands Following the speeches, waves of participants in groups of 20 or more will separate from the solidarity rally and choose to risk arrest by participating in a peaceful sit-in near the front doors to Centre Block.

"The tar sands represent a path of broken treaties, eroded human rights, catastrophic climate change, poisoned air and water and the complete stripping of Canada's morality in the international community, said Clayton Thomas-Muller of the Indigenous Environmental Network. "Our communities should not be sacrificed on the alter of Canada's addiction to dirty fossil fuel; we want a new economic paradigm that protects our relationship to the sacredness of Mother Earth."

International Journal of Environmental Sciences - 2010"Apiculture has developed into an important industry in India as honey and bee wax have become common products. Recently a sharp decline in population of honey bees has been observed in Kerala. Although the bees are susceptible to diseases and attacked by natural enemies like wasps, ants and wax moth, constant vigilance on the part of the bee keepers can overcome these adverse conditions. The present plunge in population (&lt; 0.01) was not due to these reasons. It was caused by man due to unscientific proliferation of towers and mobile phones. "Bees and other insects have survived and evolved complex immune systems on this planet over a span of millions of years. It is not logical that they would now suddenly die out now due to diseases and natural parasites. This suggests another factor has been introduced to their environment that disrupts their immune system. This man made factor is the mobile towers and mobile phones.
The public is not being informed of the threat due to deliberate attempts on the part of mobile phone makers to mask the direct causal relationship . . ."

Thermografix Consulting Corporation". . . They are unprotected, intricate electrical systems with their own frequencies. Inducing currents into existing electrical systems can cause electrical failure.
"Safety Code 6 is specific to EMF interaction with humans but the code excluded the frequencies or electrical parameters of biologic systems in a frequency equation . . ."I have sent a letter to B.C. "The domino effect of Health Canada . . . [has] kept critical information from provinces as well as municipalities trying to administer their areas.

"Smart Grids aren't so smart when the other wireless devices--called humans, pollinators and ecosystems--don't run at those frequencies.

"BC Hydro needs to be aware of the real costs to their corporation with people being harmed . . .

Richmond News, B.C. (Canada)'AHHH August. Time to pack up the tent, the cooler, camp stove, the smartphone and laptop and head out into the wilderness. "Or . . . maybe not quite so fast. Although wireless Internet is being offered at an increasing number of parks across the country, a recent survey suggests many of us in B.C. are content to keep our parks off the grid. We hope it stays that way.

"Parks have been around a long time, places where we go to experience "wonder, reverence, the feeling that one is nearer the mystery of things" as Canada's first parks commissioner described them. For just as long, our parks have faced threats - from logging, development interests and shrinking government coffers. Now add to that list wireless Internet . . .

"Many of our most vivid childhood experiences happen outdoors. It's doubtful that an app on the iPhone will offer that kind of memory.

"We're with those who still prefer to heed the call of the wild rather than the call of the Wi-Fi when we head off into nature."

Wi-Fi available in Ont., N.S., B.C., Sask., Alta. parks<em>Tech companies score another point . . . When will it stop? Where will we not have wireless "connectivity" and wireless radiation intrusion?</em>"It's now easier than ever to stay connected in provincial parks across Canada, but not all visitors are happy campers about it.

"With wireless access available at some parks in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, visitors can enjoy the web in the wild.

"We're an accommodation -- bottom line," says John Salo, southwest zone manager for Ontario Parks, the agency that oversees provincial parks.

"Yes, we protect significant [environmental] areas, but we're an accommodation, and when people go to motels and hotels, they expect to have wireless internet."

"Ontario Parks has decided to extend a pilot program that introduced wireless internet in Pinery Provincial Park last year. Salo says the hotspot at the park's convenience store will stay active until November.
"If there's a positive response, we'll sit back and determine if it's worth it to continue," he said. . ."

Watershed Sentinel - Environmental News from British Columbia and the World"What do the National Energy Plan, smart meters, Site C, IPPs, nuclear energy in the tar sands, and BC's high
voltage Northwest Transmission Line have in common? The plans for renewable energy high voltage
transmission have been spun over the decades, but now large corporate players, controlling strategic committees
in Washington and Ottawa, are ready to transform the continent and drain Canada of energy - oil, gas, hydro.
The only public involvement is that taxpayers are expected to foot the bill. It's all wrapped up in the "Clean
Energy Dialogue" about renewable energy, and nary a word about the sacrifice of wilderness. But what the
National Energy Plan and the global smart grid really mean in Canada is the draining of the hinterland, and the
Canadian hydro consumer, for electricity export and profit. "Now in an extensive feature in the upcoming September issue of the Watershed Sentinel, author and researcher
Joyce Nelson meticulously connects the dots. What follows is a sneak peek at some of the sections. Journalists

How electromagnetic fields can disrupt both solar and magnetic bee navigation and reduce immunity to disease all in one go"Many of our birds are disappearing mysteriously from the urban environment and our bees are now under serious threat. There is increasing evidence that at least some of this is due to electromagnetic pollution such as that from cell towers, cell phones, DECT cordless phones and Wifi. It appears capable of interfering with their navigation systems and also their circadian rhythms, which in turn reduces their resistance to disease. The most probable reason is that these animals use a group of magnetically-sensitive substances called cryptochromes for magnetic and solar navigation and also to control the activity of their immune systems.

"Birds are very sensitive to electromagnetic fields and some may find the electromagnetically polluted urban environment no longer tolerable. Migratory birds may also lose their sense of direction and never reach their intended destination, perhaps just falling into the sea on the way. Bees are even more under threat and are extremely important to us. Without bee pollination, there would be very few brightly colored or scented flowers in the countryside or in our gardens and many of our crops would be devastated. We would be left just with crops that are wind pollinated (mostly cereals) that do not on their own provide a healthy balanced diet, nor do they act as host to the friendly nitrogen fixing bacteria that are essential to the sustainable fertility of our soil. This may be a very heavy price to pay for our unrestricted use of cell phones and other forms of wireless communication . . ."

Chances are you haven't seen one in quite awhile. A recent study and population census, led by Ornithologist Dr. Leonard Trayner and other researchers from Scranton University found the population numbers for all North and South American species of hummingbirds have reached critical levels. In some areas the birds have disappeared completely. In others, populations have been reduced by as much as 90%.

"Stunning proof" ignored in North America, scientists sayCell Phone Hazards
"Now, a group of international researchers meeting in Istanbul,
Turkey has released what they call "stunning proof" that confirms
findings from the Council of Europe -- pulsed digital signals from
cell phones disrupt DNA, impair brain function and lower sperm
count. "A meeting convened by Environmental Health Trust, with the
Turkish cancer society, and Gazi University, revealed the new
research that the scientists say shows damage to DNA, brain
and sperm. "Nesrin Seyhan, an advisor to the World Health Organization
(WHO) and NATO and head of the Biophysics Department and
Bioelectromagnetics Laboratory at Gazi University in Ankara,
presented findings that he says confirm the warning that just four
hours of exposure to cell phone radiation disrupts the ability of
human brain cells to repair damaged genes."Insect studies "A research team at the University of Athens said insect studies
have demonstrated that acute exposure to GSM (Global System
for Mobile) signals brings about DNA fragmentation in insects'
ovarian cells, and consequently a large reduction in the
reproductive capacity of the insects. Further studies, they said,
demonstrated that long exposures induced cell death to the
insects in the study. . ."

Letter to Beekeepers and Beekeeper Associations - For the Protection of Man, Environment and Democracy"The disturbing phenomenon is presently predominantly attributed to the Varroa mite in
newspapers and periodicals. It remains uncontested that there are such connections. Yet
plausible arguments have been put forward explaining that the mite attack also occurs as
a result of previous damage to the bees' immune system due to electromagnetic fields.
"Dr. rer. nat. Ulrich Warnke, a biological scientist at Saarland University, can demonstrate
this on a firm basis in his most recent publication Bees, Birds and People, The
Destruction of Nature as a result of 'Electrosmog'. His findings are the result of his own
research over a decade, a superior overview of the state of international research,
however, above all the realisation of verifiable mechanisms which have a disorientating
and damaging effect on the bees . . ."

Research project into properties of the ionosphere, with an emphasis on developing communications and surveillance systems for civilian and military use"HAARP is a big and unassailable experiment, protected by defence (ie military) interests, with a global reach and potentially very damaging consequences, simply by interfering with natural geomagnetic and electromagnetic fields and producing unnatural resonances. If the analogy were sound (and indeed there is a very close parallel in oceanic acoustics disturbing marine life and large mammals in particular) and our world was filled by strange and ghostly echoes, or frequencies that disturbed animals and people, we would all know about it. For example, a phenomenon, or group of phenomena, termed 'the Hum' distresses a great number of people in many places all over the world, with source or sources unknown, perhaps man-made. This is more openly discussed and investigated, because people talk about it and display recognisable responses, and can describe it. What is most disturbing for many who hear it, is the inescapability, the unvarying nature of the sound, and that it is incessant.

"However, HAARP, for all its massive power, is invisible to our normal senses. What if, as some think to be the case in digital communications systems, the chief danger lies in rigid patterns, as much as in energy, power, carrier frequencies etc.? . . . .

"Rigid patterns and frequencies are not natural, and are harmful to this state of affairs. Protective responses can cease, as feedback systems lose proper corrective stimulus. What HAARP perhaps introduces in a massive way, is a global rigid pattern that can mask natural rhythms and patterns and impose a recognisable but completely uninformative electromagnetic environment. And it is this disturbance that, if for example, it disrupts even the navigation of bees or birds, threatens the whole web of life . . ."

Swiss study - 2010<em>With the impending introduction of 4G to add to the mix and smart meters transmitting from every home, how will Nature fare? Will the income from the sale of 4G frequencies make up for the loss in food production and the collapse of the honey bee? </em>Abstract - The worldwide maintenance of the honeybee has major ecological, economic, and political
implications. In the present study, electromagnetic waves originating from mobile phones were tested for
potential effects on honeybee behavior. Mobile phone handsets were placed in the close vicinity of honeybees.
The sound made by the bees was recorded and analyzed. The audiograms and spectrograms revealed that active
mobile phone handsets have a dramatic impact on the behavior of the bees, namely by inducing the worker
piping signal. In natural conditions, worker piping either announces the swarming process of the bee colony or
is a signal of a disturbed bee colony.

April 4, 2007 N.B. Access article through second available link"Scientific research has found evidence
that electromagnetic fields can have negative
effects on bees. " (...) Studies have shown
that bees exposed to strong electric fields of
over 4 Kilovolt/m, e.g. directly under a 380 kV
high voltage line, produce less honey and
show increased mortality. (The guideline for
the protection of humans from the exposure to
these fields is set at 5 kV/m)." "According to Ruzicka's observations, the bee
colonies are so weakened by the mobile telecommunications
radiation that they become
more prone to various diseases, a fact that
can also contribute to colony collapse. This is
because bees are considered to be very fragile
creatures, just like butterflies whose numbers
have also dramatically fallen during the last
few years. However, according to Dr Ruzicka,
15 years ago, bee colonies were able to
deal with a much higher degree of Varroa
mite infestation than they are able to cope
with today."

Systematic accumulation of bZIP mRNA<em>Severe sy<em>stemic stress response throughout tomato plants partially exposed for 10 minutes to sub-thermal levels of GSM frequency. </em>"Abstract- We demonstrate in the present work that low
amplitude 900 MHz stimulus constitutes a true
environmental stimulus because it induces an immediate
drop (60%) in bZIP transcription factor mRNA quantity,
and a transmission of a traumatic signal. We also show
that calmodulin transcripts increase after similar
treatment, indicating a possible involvement of calcium
metabolism in the response to EMF stimulus. </em>"In nature, plants are continuously subjected to
various kind of stimuli (wind, rain, pathogens attaks,
drought, UV light...). Because of their immobility, they
cannot escape and must therefore sense these
environmental variations and adapt their development
accordingdly. In the present days, the growing use of
wireless communication devices leads to an important
increase in the density of human-generated
Electromagnetic Field (EMF) in our immediate
environment. This point adresses numerous questions
about possible effects on lifeforms, especially human
beings. Thus, numerous reports concentrate on these
aspects, mainly with the 900-1800 MHz signals
emitted by cellular phones. Because of medical concerns,
investigations were mainly conducted through

Robert Bateman"On October 13, 2008, a 15-year-old boy named Brandon Crisp walked out of his house because his parents had taken away his Xbox video game; after a three-week search, his body was finally found. The November 19, 2008, issue of the New York Times described the huge increase of medications that are prescribed to young people. Parks and natural areas that once rang with the shouts of children are now devoid of kids. Change has been happening to society and it does not look good for our future.

"From the beginning of time, we have been connected to nature. We, of course, are literally nature's children, but, for the first time in history, that connection threatens to be broken by the majority of an entire generation and perhaps generations to come. When I read Richard Louv's landmark book, I was surprised at how insidious and widespread the problem had become. I guess I was living in a bubble. My family and friends were out in nature all the time. I was shocked to learn that perhaps the majority of mothers were afraid to let their children outside to play . . ."

AT&T Minneapolis<em>An environmental group is going to court to try to block AT&T's plan to build a 450-foot cellphone tower near the edge of the BWCA wilderness area on the Minnesota border with Ontario. </em>"When campers in the remote Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness look up on a clear night, they expect to see spectacular starry skies, the Milky Way, maybe even some meteors or the Northern Lights. They don't expect to see a flashing red light from the top of a cellphone tower.

"That's why an environmental group is going to court Monday to try to block AT&T's plan to build a 450-foot tower near the edge of the pristine wilderness area on Minnesota's border with Ontario.

"The Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness says the flashing lights would be visible from several lakes and waterways within the BWCA. It also says the tower would endanger birds ranging from eagles to warblers. The group says AT&T's own study shows the company could provide nearly as much coverage with a 199-foot tower, or two smaller towers, that wouldn't despoil the wilderness experience.

"AT&T Mobility LLC counters that one tall tower would do the best job of extending cellphone service to residents and cabins east of the gateway town of Ely and allowing paddlers in remote areas to call for help in emergencies.

"We see this as a test case between nature and technology and how we're going to balance that," said Paul Danicic, executive director of Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. He said it should be possible to both protect the wilderness and meet the needs of people who live on the edge of it . . ."

Andrew Goldsworthy 2011"Trees are now dying mysteriously from a variety of diseases in urban areas all over Europe and are also showing abnormal photoperiodic responses. We will then go on to see how weak electromagnetic fields can disrupt these and bring about many unwanted biological effects.
<ul><li>Electricity in living organisms </li><li>The chemiosmotic production of ATP in bacteria </li><li>Ion co-transport </li><li>The situation in higher plants </li><li>Cell polarity </li><li>Polarity in tissues </li><li>Cell membranes </li><li>Weak alternating fields are more effective than strong ones </li><li>Evidence from the biological effects of "electronically" conditioned water </li><li>Cracks in the bark </li><li>Phloem nodules </li><li>The biological clock. </li><li>Radio-frequency radiation interferes with the biological clock </li><li>Cryptochrome and the biological clock </li><li>Effects on the shedding of leaves</li></ul>

The email explains the mechanism by which base station radiation may be responsible for the increased incidence of cancer around them, the decline of the bees, and the loss of many trees within range to pathogens. It also explains how a simple modification to the signal could put it right. It remains to be seen whether they are prepared to do anything about it.

Science Daily - March 16, 2011"The knowledge most critical to protecting these whales from risk of sonar involves measuring the threshold between safe and risky exposure levels, but until now it has not been known how beaked whales respond to sonar, much less the levels that pose a problem. "We know so little about beaked whales because they prefer deep waters far offshore, where they can dive on one breath of air to depths of over a mile for up to an hour and a half," said Peter Tyack, a senior scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).
"Now, an international team of researchers reports in a paper led by Tyack the first data on how beaked whales respond to naval sonar exercises. Their results suggest that sonar indeed affects the behavior and movement of whales . . ."<em></em><em>From Wikipedia: SONAR (originally an acronym for SOund Navigation And Ranging) is a technique that uses sound propagation (usually underwater, as in submarine navigation) to navigate, communicate with or detect other vessels. Two types of technology share the name "sonar": passive sonar is essentially listening for the sound made by vessels; active sonar is emitting pulses of sounds and listening for echoes . . .</em>

animals and plants, pineal function, weather patterns - Gerald Goldberg, MD". . . As in radio and other transmitters, crystals act to convert certain discrete frequencies into electrical signals. Before we had all of the electro-pollution, animals could simply orient themselves to the earth's electromagnetic signature. Additionally animals could store into memory at a subconscious level the discrete signatures of subtle variations in electromagnetic signalling from various regions. This would explain the highly specific nature of migratory behaviour seen in certain animals. What has not been appreciated is the ability which has probably evolved over time to see, complex patterns that are generated from the earth's electromagnetic signature. So not only do animals have the ability to sense electromagnetic patterns but they also may see them in great detail. I will use an analogue. Imagine if someone told you the eye senses light. Well that is a very interesting observation. However you know from your own personal observation that you are accustomed to seeing whole patterns and the patterns themselves have personal meaning for you. The brain does translate these simple appearing signals and if you will extracts the information contained in them."

The World Foundation for Natural Science - April, 2004". . . Also with the introduction of the wireless systems an increased warming has been recognized. By about 1920 the low frequency long waves had been introduced, followed in 1940 by the higher frequencies of the short waves and in about 1959 by the very much higher frequencies of the microwaves. Is there a causal connection between the wireless systems and the warming of the earth? The heating effect of the technical radiation can today be expected to be common knowledge. It is also known that the higher the frequencies the richer the energy and the higher the warming effect of the technical radiation (as in a microwave-oven). With the introduction of the high frequency mobile telephones, the satellites and the HAARP, it must therefore be expected that the entire atmosphere between the earth and the ionosphere, which begins approximately at 80-100 km above sea level, will be warmed in a similar way to that in microwave-ovens. The HAARP is even using focussed and pulsated radiation with which the ionosphere literally is being melted into the form of a mirror from which the radiation can again be reflected back to earth . . ."

This document may help us better understand why the U.S. military is interested in opposing a more protective guideline for microwave radiation.Abstract: This study was undertaken to provide a review and evaluation of the current Eurasian Communist country state-of-the-art in the area of the effects of radiowaves and microwaves. It generally covers the 1968-1975 period. The major topics include discussions of the effects on humans and animals. The study provides information on the general trends of research with special attention to possible military applications. Where appropriate, information on safety standards and research personalities and facilities is provided. If the more advanced nations of the West are strict in the enforcement of stringent exposure standards, there could be unfavorable effects on industrial output and military function.Clearly "industrial output and military function" came before health. <em>To read more and download this document visit: </em>http://www.magdahavas.com/2011/02/24/pick-of-the-week-23-research-on-biological-effects-of-radio-frequency-radiation-in-eurasian-communist-countries-1976/

Science Report BBC News"Scientists around the world will be watching closely as three eruptions from the Sun reach the Earth over Thursday and Friday.

These "coronal mass ejections" will slam into the Earth's magnetic shield.
The waves of charged solar particles are the result of three solar flares directed at Earth in recent days, including the most powerful since 2006 . . . " Paul Rincon, Science Reporter BBC News"So, it will disrupt electricity supplies etc but needless to say, no mention of health

Well, there is a wealth of data on health disruption.

So, unfortunately we have a natural experiment.

Do be on the look-out for factors known to be associated with solar flares (producing magnetic field pulses around 100 nanotesla, although I guess this is a biggy and up to 500 nT (0.5 microtesla). We are talking about depressive symptoms, heart beat irregularity, loss of sleep etc." Professor Denis Henshaw

Research Study - Palmer, Rycroft and Cermack - August 2006"The possibility that conditions on the Sun and in the Earth's magnetosphere can affect human health at the Earth's surface has been debated for many
decades. This work reviews the research undertaken in the field of heliobiology,
focusing on the effect of variations of geomagnetic activity on human cardiovascular
health. Data from previous research are analysed for their statistical significance,
resulting in support for some studies and the undermining of others. Three conclusions are that geomagnetic effects are more pronounced at higher magnetic latitudes, that extremely high as well as extremely low values of geomagnetic activity
seem to have adverse health effects and that a subset of the population (10-15%) is
predisposed to adverse health due to geomagnetic variations . . . "

1994 - Incidence of Depression as measured by a Research Report in British Journal of Psychiatry"The hypothesis that geomagnetic storms may partly account for the seasonal variation in the
incidence of depression, by acting as a precipitant of depressive illness in susceptible
individuals, is supported by a statistically significant 36.2% increasein male hospital admissions
with a diagnosis of depressed phase, manic-depressive illness in the second week following
such storms compared with geomagnetically quiet control periods. There is a smaller but not
statistically significant increase in female psychotic depression and non-psychotic depression
admissions following storms. There was no correlation between geomagnetic storm levels
and number of male admissions with psychotic depression, which is consistent with a threshold
event affecting predisposed individuals. Phase advance in pineal circadian rhythms of melatonin
synthesis may be a possible mechanism of causation or be present as a consequence of
5-hydroxytryptamine and adrenergic system dysfunction associated with geomagnetic
disturbance. Effects on cell membrane permeability, calcium channel activity and retinal
magneto-receptors are suggested as possible underlying biochemical mechanisms . . ."

Analysing the Health Impacts of Modern Telecommunications Microwaves

Dimitris J. Panagopoulos - Athens, Greece"In the present study we showed that microwave radiations used in modern mobile
telecommunications can damage DNA and induce cell death or heritable mutations which
may in turn result in reproduction decreases, degenerative deceases, or cancer. We analyzed
the biophysical and biochemical mechanism underlying this biological impact, and discussed
dosimetry and protection issues. All healthy organisms have defense mechanisms in order to repair biological damages.
But defense mechanisms are weaker in children and old individuals, and become also weaker during sicknesses or during stress conditions. Although even the most serious biological
effects may not necessarily lead to health effects in an exposed individual, all health effects
are initiated by corresponding biological ones. Thereby, biological effects-especially the most
serious ones as is DNA damage or cell death induction-may potentially lead to health effects. . . The mission of technology is putatively to improve the living conditions of the human
race. Technological evolution is accomplished by use of the natural powers, such as
electromagnetism. But the use of these powers and the improvement of the living conditions
must always be carried out without violating the natural environment, the powers of which we
are actually using, and without undermining human health.
Knowing the dangers of each new technological achievement and finding ways to use
technology safely, might be even more important than technology itself." Dimitris Panagopoulos<em>"This work is a tremendous leap forward in terms of consolidating the science around wireless communication technology. Dr Panagopoulos' presentation is well thought out and presented in a very clear and thorough manner. I hope others move forward from this wonderfully thought-provoking paper. Dr. Panagopoulos clearly is emerging as a thought-leader in this field."</em><em>Dr. George L.

International Journal of Environmental Sciences - Kerala"Apiculture has developed into an important industry in India as honey and beeswax have become common products. It was caused by man due to unscientific proliferation of towers and mobile phones."
"Bees and other insects have survived and evolved complex immune systems on this planet over a span of millions of years. It is not logical that they would now suddenly die out now due to diseases and natural parasites. This suggests another factor has been introduced to their environment that disrupts their immune system. This man made factor is the mobile towers and mobile phones.""The public is not being informed of the threat due to deliberate attempts on the part of mobile phone makers to mask the direct causal relationship. Over the past several months a cadre of scientists, funded by the deep pockets of the mobile phone industry, has suggested viruses bacteria, and pesticides are to blame for the unprecedented honey bee decline. Rather than critically assessing the problem, the industry is dealing with it as a poliproblem thus manipulating perception of the appropriate remedy.

However, Indians could risk losing even this right to self determination if the cellular providers can impose a country wide mandate prohibiting regulation against them, similar to the Telecommunications Act of 1996 in the United States. The Act prohibited local governments from making siting decisions based on the perceived health impacts of wireless facilities. Indian advocates are concerned that such regulations might be upheld in India as they were in the United States in order to "eliminate service gaps in its cellular telephone service area."

Radar, compasses, and infrared detectors are all man-made contraptions that enable humans to stretch beyond our natural senses. Other animals have these inbuilt in their bodies.

The flow of molten material in the earth's core and the flow of ions in the atmosphere generate a magnetic field that surrounds the earth. Amazingly, animals can sense this magnetic field. We need compasses to help us navigate by detecting the magnetic north. Many animals, and even some bacteria, have an inbuilt magnetic sense that enables them to go long distances in the correct direction . . . "

Experimental Dermatology Unit"Wireless communication is now being implemented in our daily life in a very fast way. At
the same time, it is becoming more and more obvious that the exposure to electromagnetic
fields not only may induce acute thermal effects to living organisms, but also non-thermal
effects, the latter often after longer exposures . . . It should be noted that we are not the only species at jeopardy,
practically all animals and plants may be at stake. Although epidemiological and ecological
investigations as such never demonstrate causative effects, due to the vast number of
confounders, they confirm the relevance of the controlled observations in the laboratories. Because the effects are reproducibly observed and links to pathology cannot be excluded, the
precautionary principle should be in force in the implementation of this new technology
within the society. This will be the only method to support the sustainability of these
innovative wireless communication technologies . . .
Many smart meters are close to beds, kitchens, playrooms, and similar locations. These
wireless systems are never off, and the exposure is not voluntary. The smart meters are being
forced on citizens everywhere. Based on this, the inauguration of smart meters with grudging
and involuntary exposure of millions to billions of human beings to pulsed microwave
radiation should immediately be prohibited until 'the red flag' can be hauled down once and for all. "

Will the Communications Industry be the Final Straw for Our Planet's Ecosystems?During a recent visit to Africa, a gentleman took me to a field full of plants and said: "What do you hear Barrie?" I replied: "Nothing". He said: "Normally you and I would not be able to hear each other now, there would be so many bees buzzing, however, since that mobile phone transmitter went up, we haven't seena single bee." I received other similar reports concerning bees, birds, even ants during my stay in Africa. It was explained to me that the ants are very important for their symbiotic relationship with plants. The plants produce a sweet substance to feed the ants and in returnn the ants prevent insects landing on and eating the plant's leaves. Hence, ants guarantee crop safety and harvest.

adverse influence of radio frequency background on trembling aspen seedlingsInternational Journal of Forestry Research

"Numerous incidents of aspen decline have been recorded in North America over the past half century, and incidents of very rapid
mortality of aspen clones have been observed in Colorado since 2004. The radio frequency (RF) environment of the earth has
undergone major changes in the past two centuries due to the development and use of electricity in power and communications
applications, and the anthropogenic RF background continues to increase in intensity and complexity. This study suggests that
the RF background may have strong adverse effects on growth rate and fall anthocyanin production in aspen, and may be an
underlying factor in aspen decline."

Insights of DC area telecommunications service company executive"Bees generate electromagnetic signals with a
modulation frequency between 180 and 250 Hz when they do their
communications dances. Hungry bees react to those frequencies by erecting their
antennae.Research done by Ulrich Warnke reported that the communication
impulses of the antennae when touched by a fellow bee can be measured with an
oscillograph and that in the presence of strong electrical fields bees' communication is disturbed and they become aggressive while stinging one
another to death, and will leave the hive if possible."

Radiofrequency FieldsPathophysiology Report - Olle JohanssonA number of papers dealing with the effects of <strong>modern, man-made electromagnetic fields</strong> (EMFs) on the immune system are summarized in the present review. EMFs disturb <strong>immune function</strong> through stimulation of various <strong>allergic and inflammatory</strong> responses, as well as effects on<strong> tissue repair processes</strong>. Such disturbances increase the <strong>risks for various diseases</strong>, including <strong>cancer</strong>. These and the EMF effects on other biological processes (e.g. DNA damage, neurological effects, etc.) are now widely reported to occur at<strong> exposure levels significantly below most current national and international safety limits</strong>. Obviously, biologically based exposure standards are needed to prevent disruption of normal body processes and potential adverse health effects of chronic exposure.

EMF Effects on Wildlife"A review on the impact of radiofrequency radiation from wireless telecommunications on wildlife is presented. Electromagnetic radiation
is a form of environmental pollution which may hurt wildlife. Phone masts located in their living areas are irradiating continuously some
species that could suffer long term effects, like reduction of their natural defenses, deterioration of their health, problems in reproduction and
reduction of their useful territory through habitat deterioration. Electromagnetic radiation can exert an aversive behavioral response in rats,
bats and birds such as sparrows. Therefore microwave and radiofrequency pollution constitutes a potential cause for the decline of animal
populations and deterioration of health of plants living near phone masts. To measure these effects urgent specific studies are necessary."

Is this an important piece of the puzzle? / 113 references"A bibliographical review on the possible effects of radiofrequency radiation (RFR) from wireless
telecommunications on living organisms and its impact on amphibians is presented. The technical
characteristics of this new technology and the scientific discoveries that are of interest in the study of
their effects on wild fauna and amphibians are described. Electromagnetic pollution (in the microwave
and in the radiofrequency range) is a possible cause for deformations and decline of some amphibian
populations. Keeping in mind that amphibians are reliable bio-indicators, it is of great importance to
carry out studies on the effects of this new type of contamination. Finally, some methodologies that
could be useful to determine the adverse health effects are proposed."

Animals are very sensitive electrochemical complexes that communicate with their environment through electrical impulses. Ionic currents and electric potential differences exist through the cellular membranes and corporal fluids [6]. The intrinsic electromagnetic fields from the biological structures are characterized by certain specific frequencies that can be interfered with by the electromagnetic radiation, through induction and causing modification in their biological responses [3]. Animals exposed to the EMF can suffer a deterioration of health, changes in behavior [7, 8], and changes in reproductive success [9, 10]. . . "</p>

From the Institute of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmacy at the Veterinary Faculty of Hannover and the Scientific Institute of Electronics and Radar at the University of the German Federal Armed Forces
"In addition to a considerable reduction of milk yield and increasing occurences of health problems, behavioural abnormalities that have not yet been examined, have been observed over the last two years in a herd of dairy cows maintained in close proximity to a TV and Radio transmitting antenna. In view of the previously known effects of electromagnetic fields it may be possible that the observed abnormalities are related to the electromagnetic field exposure.""After the above case had been published by the media and agricultural magazines, more farmers have come forward describing similar cases."
